I teach in a high poverty, inner city public school district with limited funds. I teach in a special needs integrated preschool classroom with fourteen students. Students' disabilities range from down syndrome, autistic and developmental delayed. I am a new teacher with very limited resources. When I entered my classroom this year, I was shocked that there was little there. I scurried around trying to pick up inexpensive items to make the classroom a fun and safe place. Like all young children, my students are active and energetic. They love coming to school to learn and playing with their friends. My students enjoy sitting at tables using magnetic letters, being curled up on a rug to look at a story, dressing up in the pretend house area, painting at the easel, and building a long train with blocks. They also love to dance and move since many students have communication delays which makes it difficult to communicate with words.
