The Time Magazine subscriptions will allow every student in my class to regularly read about current, real-world science issues. The magazines, delivered weekly, include articles about endangered species, world politics, and space exploration, interviews with real scientists, and exposure to new facts, vocabulary, and different types of charts and graphs.
Through this magazine, students will have direct access to current, cutting-edge science, which will constantly re-invest them in the idea that science can be used to improve the world. And by investing in both the online and print versions, we can connect stories and classroom learning during lessons, even using archived articles as the basis for research and project-based learning.
The chess sets are an expansion on a single experiment I ran last year, when we used just one chess set for the entire year. Students were so eager to play and coach one another, at all times of the year, and never tired of the game. They would wait patiently for their turn, sometimes for weeks, just to play one game. Their socials skills also improved, as they learned how to compete while still maintaining total self-control and utmost respect for their opponent.
During chess games, I saw their passion for competing and critical thinking. I also saw how this game allowed some students to shine who would typically hold back in classroom discussions. By purchasing enough chess sets for the entire class to play at once, we can now hold tournaments, share with other classes, and start our first-ever KCCP chess team.
