My students show up to school every day with smiles on their faces and a willingness to try and learn a subject most of them dislike greatly: Algebra. My students attend a large comprehensive high school in California. Every day they fight the challenges of households with a single working parent and two or more younger siblings. Money is tight for most of the students' families and yet the students are polite and hardworking. They deserve all the privileges (graphing calculators) a middle/upper class education can give you but are set up to fail when neither they nor their school can afford to provide those privileges for them.
