Funded Mar 27, 2024Thank you so much for supplying our entire 8th grade with owl pellets! The project was funded so quickly and generously. We were able to provide each pair of students with an owl pellet to complete their stations activity on energy transfer in ecosystems. This is a really difficult concept to understand as it's very abstract. We use water to represent energy, they read about it, watch a video, and engage in discussion. But the most impactful moment is for them to see the owl pellet and understand directly how energy in the form of biomass is lost as one moves up the food chain from trophic level to trophic level.
Students were highly engaged as they pulled apart the pellets and analyzed the contents. They determined the prey of the owl and concluded why energy was lost from primary to secondary consumer. This coupled with a trip to a local park where we assessed the ecosystem, created concrete experiences for our students to engage with and understand ecological relationships.
Your generosity was so helpful!”
With gratitude,
Ms. L.
