2nd Grade Listening Center
Funded Oct 30, 2019Thank you so much for your generous donations. We never would’ve been able to make this happen without your support. These second grade kiddos will absolutely love having this new and fun way of accessing literature. I can’t wait to see the strides they all make because of this.”

This classroom project was brought to life by An anonymous classroom supporter and 15 other donors.Classroom Library Project
Funded Dec 31, 2015This project has done wonderful things for my students. I have used this donation to add a leveled section to my classroom library. Students can go to the cart and the bins are arranged by reading level which takes the guesswork out of choosing books. They can pick books that they like AND that are on their level. With these texts, I am able to provide a bigger variety of books to my students and teach a variety of lessons such as: How to choose a "just right" book, how is a fiction book different than a non fiction book, what are some strategies that good readers do before, during and after they read, etc. The students are loving their new books!
In my classroom, reading follows a balanced literacy model. What this means is that I have a focus lesson such as how to choose a just right book. I have a mentor text that I use to model the behavior of choosing a just right book. Then, I give them a chance to practice the skill with me using maybe just a few bins. After that, students would be turned loose to practice their skill on their own (independent practice). So here, students would practice selecting books for their book bags, then begin reading them. While this is happening, I go around and check in with several students to see if they actually have a "Just right" book and why or why not. At the end of independent practice, we all come back together and students share their experiences. What worked? What didn't? Why or Why not? Balanced literacy is a wonderful way to teach reading in the classroom, but its different because no one hands you a reading series that you have to work your way through. It exists completely within our own classroom libraries. So the more full and varied they can be, the better.
Although the cart and leveled bins benefit everyone in my room, I've noticed that my advanced readers are loving the new higher level books. I have several students who are now completely into The Boxcar Children series. They're obsessed!! There's nothing more rewarding than getting a child excited about reading. Thank you again!”
