  • Increase Technology In The Classroom With An iPad (Part 2)

    Funded May 15, 2012

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation of an iPad to our class. This iPad was put to good use immediately! My students love any addition of technology into the classroom and are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

An iPad is a wonderful resource to have in an early childhood classroom. Using this new iPad, my students are able to read electronic books borrowed from our local library. They also build their math and literacy skills while using many educational apps. The quick access to the Internet is also amazing--I show my students educational videos and images found online to enhance lesson content. Next school year, I plan on hooking up the iPad to a projector to enhance lesson content even further!

Your help has ensured that my second grade students receive a high-quality education throughout the year, one that is full of hands-on technology experiences. Thank you again for providing the class with this incredible new iPad. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. Have a great summer!

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Konarski

  • Crayons! Markers! Paper!

    Funded Mar 14, 2012

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation of crayons, markers, and copy paper to our class. You should have seen the looks on my students' faces when they used the crayons and markers for the first time! My students are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

Crayons and markers are a wonderful and necessary resource to have in an early childhood classroom. While we did have a class set of crayons and markers prior to your donation, the boxes were several years old and had seen much wear and tear. What seven or eight year old child wants to search endlessly in a box of broken crayons for a color that may or not be there? Who wants to uncap a marker to start coloring, only to find out that the marker is dried out? Can you imagine the frustration on a child's face when he thinks he has finally found the black crayon, colors a bit more of his masterpiece, and discovers that that black crayons was really an unlabeled purple crayon in disguise?

The white copy paper and packs of fun colored copy paper have also proven to be a tremendous blessing as well. So far we have used the paper to print homework assignments on, to create flashcards with, and to add special touches to class projects.

Your help has ensured that my second grade students receive a high-quality education throughout the year, one that is full of crayons, markers, and copy paper. Thank you again for providing the class with these resources. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. We wish you all the best!

  • Chart Paper, Please!

    Funded Dec 9, 2011

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation of chart paper to our class. My students are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

Chart paper is a wonderful and necessary resource to have in an early childhood classroom. We don't have a SmartBoard. We don't have an ELMO projector. But we still have a need to see vocabulary words, math problems, and story starters written large enough for everyone in the class to see. The chart paper pads have been a tremendous blessing! On a daily basis we use chart paper to review our vocabulary words. We also use sheets during instruction and post the resulting charts, rules, etc. around the classroom for future reference.

Your help has ensured that my second grade students receive a high-quality education throughout the year. Thank you again for providing the class with this chart paper. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. We wish you all the best!

  • We Need More Books!

    Funded Sep 23, 2011

New books! Did Ms. K say we got new books?!?! I wish you could have seen my students' faces as I unveiled the fiction and nonfiction book sets your donation brought into my classroom.

These paperback library sets were put to use immediately. Every week each of my students takes seven books from the classroom library to read at home throughout the week. After introducing these new books into the library, my students took extra care when selecting book-box books—there were so many exciting and new choices! Many of our old library books had been put through the wringer. Through typical wear-and-tear caused by classes full of second graders bringing 125+ books to and from school every week for nine years, many of our books had torn covers, missing pages, etc. When we could, we salvaged books with "book surgery". The result was a library that definitely looked a little rough around the edges and wasn't very inviting to the average seven year old.

My second graders are becoming more and more fluent readers with each passing day. In order to maintain their motivation to read, they need a wide selection of high interest books at their fingertips. Your donation has made this possible. As a teacher, one of the most rewarding classroom moments is witnessing students getting excited about reading. Since the introduction of these books into the classroom, I have witnessed this moment many times.

Your help has ensured that my second grade students receive a high-quality education throughout the year, one that is full of excellent literature everyday. Thank you again for providing the class with these incredible new books. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. ”

  • More Dry Erase Markers, Please!

    Funded Sep 14, 2011

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation of dry erase markers to our class. My students love these new additions to the classroom and are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

Our previous supply of dry erase markers was on its last leg! We use these markers on a daily basis for math and word work practice. Prior to the new markers, students would have to partner up to share the few markers available. Even then, these markers were often running so low on ink that they barely left a mark on the slates! All attempts to instruct from the teaching easel became instant comedy: How many times would Ms. K need to reach into the marker can before she could find one that actually worked?

The new addition of dry erase markers has helped make our classroom a more productive and smooth running environment. Gone are the days of needlessly hunting for the few markers that actually work! Now we can use these fantastic teaching tools without hassle. Because mistakes can so easily be erased on dry erase slates, my second grade students are more willing to take educational risks when using these markers, much more so than with paper and pencils. Each time one of my students takes an educational risk, he or she becomes a stronger reader, writer, or mathematician. Practice makes perfect, after all.

Your help has ensured that my second grade students receive a high-quality education throughout the year, one that is full of many lessons taught from the dry-erase teaching easel and daily use of personal slates for class work. Thank you again for providing the class with these incredible supplies. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness.”

  • Can I Print This?

    Funded Sep 25, 2011

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation to our class. The toner was put to good use immediately in our classroom printer. My students love that they now have the ability to print their work in the classroom and are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

The printer is used on a daily basis in the classroom. My students use it to create hard copies of pieces of writing they have been working on. They also sometimes print out pages they find while searching the Internet for information on specific topics they want to learn more about. I use this printer to generate worksheets for both homework and classwork for my students. Without a working toner cartridge, my students and I simply can't print out our work!

My students are just beginning to understand the concept of a donor and are really touched that an anonymous person would help them out. With each donation to our classroom, my students develop a stronger sense that they DO matter, they ARE important, and others NOTICE and CARE about them.

Simply put, your help has ensured that all of our printing needs will be taken care of through June and maybe into the next school year! Thank you again for providing the class with these toner cartridges. My current group of second graders' quality of education has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. We wish you all the best! ”

  • Tuesday!

    Funded May 9, 2011

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation of books by David Wiesner to our class. Each child in my class received his or her very own copy of Tuesday, a beautifully illustrated book about frogs who temporarily take over the world one Tuesday! The other Wiesner books were placed into our classroom library, and each copy has been read over and over again by my students during reading time!

You can never have enough books in an early childhood classroom, particularly books by an author/illustrator as talented as David Wiesner! Your donation more than doubled the number of Wiesner books in our library! You also provided each child with a copy of a book that they will treasure all summer long!

Your help has ensured that my second grade students receive a high-quality education throughout the year, one that is full of excellent literature both in school and at home. Thank you again for providing the class with these incredible new books by David Wiesner. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. ”

  • We're Going Where?!

    Funded Jan 21, 2011

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donations towards our Top of the Rock field trip. My students loved the trip and are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

I see the Empire State Building! Look, the Chrysler Building! Is that Central Park? Wow, the Statue of Liberty! I wish you could have seen my students' faces as we walked off the elevator and onto the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

Most of my students rarely leave their Brooklyn neighborhood. The school bus ride over the Manhattan Bridge (with a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge to the right, the Statue of Liberty in the distance, and the Williamsburg Bridge to the left!) was one of the first highlights of the day. Soon after came the elevator ride to the very top of one of the tallest buildings my students have ever seen—there was even a glass ceiling and TV screen in the elevator, so you could watch the floors zoom by as the screen counted them down!

Once we got off the elevator, we stepped foot onto the observation deck where we could see 360° around us from our perch in Midtown Manhattan. We were second grade social studies superstars, pointing out Central Park, the East River, the Hudson River, and all of the other sights and landmarks we learned about this year. I think we even cleared up some bridge confusion with a group of tourists!

Your generosity provided my second grade students with an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience. Thank you again for supporting our class and its field trip to the Top of the Rock. My students' second grade education has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness.”

  • Three Cheers for Chairs! Part 2

    Funded Jan 13, 2011

On behalf of my second graders, thank you again for your donation to our class. These 15 chairs were put to good use within minutes of arriving in our classroom! My students love these new additions to the room and are incredibly appreciative of the continued generosity from you and other DonorsChoose.org patrons.

Imagine if you showed up to your place of employment and your desk chair was broken or far too small to sit in. More likely than not, a suitable replacement would be quickly found for you. An adult would certainly not be expected to sit in an uncomfortable or broken seat. Why should it be any different for a seven- or eight-year old?

Our school is in a high need, low income area. Due to budget cuts, often times my students are unable to receive even the most basic of supplies. We have EXACTLY the same number of students as chairs. At any given time, all of my chairs are in use—so some students had to sit on chairs far too small for them and other students had to sit on chairs that were cracked down the middle of the seat. Unfortunately they had to endure these chairs because my school was unable to replace them! Imagine the look of disappointment when a second grader finds out that it's his turn to sit in one of the "bad" chairs.

Fifteen new chairs might not sound like much, but they really do mean the world to my class. My students are just beginning to understand the concept of a donor and are really touched that an anonymous person would help them out. With each donation to our classroom, my students develop a stronger sense that they DO matter, they ARE important, and others NOTICE and CARE about them.

Simply put, your help has provided every student in my class with a comfortable place to sit. A desk and chair are even more basic than a pencil and paper when it comes to school supplies! Thank you again for providing the class with these new chairs. My current group of second graders' quality of education (not to mention many future groups!) has undoubtedly been improved by your kindness. We wish you all the best! ”
