  • Student Council Halloween Party

    Funded Oct 15, 2022

Students were able to plan the Halloween party they had always hoped to have with your generous donations. Student Council planned and coordinated most of the activities and about 200 students participated in the event.

We thank you for supporting our youth. While we do believe in the importance of academics, we also understand the value in supporting students in their social emotional growth through events like these. Your support has been appreciated. As you can see from the photos, the students had a great time.”

  • Creating a Safe Learning Environment for Health 10

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

I'd like to take this moment to thank you for your generosity. At the time of this project, we were faced with so many unknowns. And even still, each day has been a tip toe into the school year as we are faced with rising COVID rates. When the resources purchased via your generous donation arrived, I was able separate the items into boxed kits and share them with the in-person teachers for use.

Our students felt safer, seeing materials all around that would provide a safer school environment during the time of COVID. They had tons of hand sanitizer at their disposal, wipes, spare masks, and cleaning agents. Students masks (from home) would often break, so having spares really helped us out.

The fear is very much still real. As we are eager to return to the classroom, we feel safer knowing we were able to obtain materials so many schools were left without. It was through your generosity that students were able to learn in a safe environment while in person. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

  • Snacks for Success at SPHS

    Funded Oct 25, 2019

I send you my sincerest thanks for your donation. My students so often struggle with the long school day and having access to healthy snacks. I have been teaching for 8 years, and it has been the same every year, students come to school with high sugared drinks and snacks, and then crash on an empty stomach from refusing the school lunch that is offered.

Though this may seem like a small task, having snacks will support my students in their daily success in my class. My students were amazed when they saw our closet full of snacks. It has also supported students in our after school clubs. After a long day they find solace and comfort in raiding the snack closet to keep active during their extracurricular activities.

I hope to continue to stock our snack closet to keep the success lasting all year. I don't want my students to fall short of their true potential because they are too weak or tired or hungry from a long day at school. Thanks again for your contribution.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cruz

  • LGBTQ+ Young Adult Book Club: Year 2

    Funded Aug 20, 2019

First, I'd like to thank you for your donations. The books we purchased with them really intrigued our students in their book club. Our club has been able to continue into a second year, with activities such as reading, discussions, sharing our preferred reading environments, introducing some students to audio books, making connections to our lives, and building a stronger rapport with one another.

With the funding to continue our club, we were able to create a culture of reading. The academic conversations that these books inspired between teachers and students strengthened the rapport within our small learning community. We supported students' verbal expression after they delved into books with controversial young adult topics that are not often discussed in their traditional ELA classes. We ignited a fire that was waiting to burn. The students genuinely love to read, and just needed an opportunity, materials and guidance to enhance their learning. Since the club ended, just last week, students have been coming to me with book recommendations for the summer, and updating me on what they're reading next. We are currently developing plans for next year's book club, by adding more books to the list and creating more promotional events to engage students in a culture of reading within Sunset Park High School.

Our next step is bringing these stories into their regular ELA classes, to gain a larger audience for the young adult issues presented in these novels. Thanks again.”

  • Representation Matters! Printing Posters Showcasing All Cultures and Countries

    Funded Aug 9, 2019

I would first like to thank you for donating to this project. We have definitely struggled as a school to have consistent working technology, so it is a relief to get the ball rolling on incorporating more technology into the classroom. This particular item of technology supported my colleagues and students in creating more awareness of important historical and modern figures within the Latinx community. I'd like to continue to support the school community in developing more opportunities to showcase successful people of color within the physical environment of the school.

What was most exciting for students was seeing how invested we were in trying to find more ways to represent people of color in the classroom. One student from my elective had even commented that they didn't even look at what was even on the walls prior to us highlighting the posters. While I still think that to have a greater impact takes time, I think we are on the right path.

Our next step will be to use the technology to support students in the classroom. I'd like to incorporate it into projects that we can use to then highlight student achievements alongside the historical and modern figures.

So thank you for for supporting us in this process. You are so appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cruz

I went to Barnes and Noble, in an attempt to find books or posters of successful people of color. I can home empty handed. I went on Amazon.com with the same intention. I had the same result. By purchasing a color printer to print posters showcasing successful people of color in each content area, we are showing students every day that they too can be a historian, or a scientist; their skin color is not an obstacle but an asset. Help up get this printer. The posters are made and ready to print. Let's show students that people who look like them have gone above and beyond in their respective fields, and they can be just as successful too.
