Sprout & Sautee: Cooking and Gardening at the Lab
Funded Oct 15, 2012Thank you so much for supporting our "Sprout & Sautee: Cooking and Gardening at The LAB" project!
We have been using the wonderful knife set for great cooking units with our students. In these cooking (and eating!) opportunities, our youth practice leadership, patience, and confidence, share about their lives, build community and find a sense of mastery.
We have been delving into the Wellness curriculum. Students have been learning about basic culinary skills, and considering what career options might be available to them in this realm.
Our gardening efforts will begin this spring, with warmer weather and thawed soil.”

Music From Our Community: Bringing Piano and Voice Lessons
Funded Mar 7, 2012Thank you so much for supporting this important project at The LAB. Bringing an African American Piano instructor and role model from Walker West Music Academy has been such a great opportunity for us. Our students don't often have the opportunity for piano or music instruction, especially from instructors so culturally connected to their lives. To be able to provide these lessons and such a rich mentorship opportunity right at our school for our students is so exciting. Thank you for supporting this effort. ”

Taking Students for a Spin
Funded Dec 5, 2010Thanks for your contribution to our new Youth Spinning group! This is a new offering at our school and it is a hit! The youth are able to learn about how exercise can be a healthy coping strategy and a great way to manage stress in life. Kathy has a great way of encouraging youth. She helps them make the connection to the struggle and perseverance it takes to hang in there on the tough "hills", both on the bike and in life. Her energy and commitment to help youth never give up shines through in the spinning group. Thanks for helping us make this happen!”

Photo Printers For Our Photo Gallery Show!
Funded Jan 11, 2010Thank you for your contributions to this project!
Due to your generosity, students that participate in a photography residency at The Lab now have the opportunity print their work and keep a copy of the finished product.
Recently students have been working on self-portrait pictures in which they use digital cameras to capture images of themselves while holding the camera at different angles, using different lighting options, incorporating props and experimenting with different poses. Students then edit their photos using iphoto and are given the opportunity to print 2 self-portraits that they get to keep.
Now that The Lab has 3 new photo printers, all students that participate in a photography residency at The Lab are able to walk away from the experience with basic digital camera skills, enhanced computer/editing skills and a physical picture that they can keep forever.
Thank you again.”

Due to your generosity, students at The Lab now have the opportunity to participate in a photography residency. This is a 6-week experience in which students use digital cameras to learn about and take pictures of texture, angles, self-portraits and name photography.
Now that The Lab has 2 digital cameras, the students have been able to learn about photography as well as editing photos in iphoto. The results have been quite impressive!
Thank you for your contributions.

Lights, Cameras, Action!
Funded Apr 7, 2009Thank you so much for contributing to this project. We are having a great time working with youth in The Lab and now, more students will have the opportunity to use and learn more about video cameras!
Students at The Lab spent time doing peer interviews with one another in which each pair of students worked together to brainstorm a list of interview questions that they would eventually take turns asking one another while being video taped. The students had a great time getting to know one another and thoroughly enjoyed watching the video taped segments of their peers.
Your generosity is so appreciated. Thanks again!
