My students have moderate developmental delays and/or a diagnosis of autism. The classroom provides a structured learning environment where they can receive specialized assistance with their communication, self-help, fine motor, cognitive and socialization skills. The elementary school is located in Tacoma, Washington and 88% of the students attending this school come from homes with incomes that fall below the poverty line. This is a newly opened classroom due to the increase in identified early learners with developmental delays. The students in my classroom are 3-5 years of age and typically join the classroom without verbal language. A structured classroom that provides rigorous learning skills helps them to move toward general education in later years.
