  • Help Set Goals!

    Funded Feb 5, 2014

Again, I am overwhelmed with gratitude with your immediate response to this project. Technology is truly a critical tool for education. Thank you for joining the mission to bring these resources to our school.

The students of 6Broadway were thrilled to have the iPad introduced into the classroom. Among the excitement I overheard proclamations such as, "Wow! That is so cool!", "Finally! It's about time!", and "We can do so many cool things with these!" I couldn't agree more! This initial reaction is exactly why iPads should be in all classrooms.

Within the first week with the iPad, my co-teachers and I were immediately using it to enhance our lessons. We searched the App Store and stocked up on beneficial education apps. For example, we immediately used the materials and videos from Khan Academy to assist in math. After a lesson on equations, I was able to provide additional assistance to students with an interactive video to support their learning. The students were able to listen and watch the video to guide their classwork. While these students were given support with the iPad I was able to circulate the room and answer other questions.

In Social Studies, students used the iPad to help guide their research on their individual projects on Ancient Greece. While some students were using classroom laptops, other students were able to pass around the iPad to increase their engagement in their research. Students were motivated with the interactive interface and could zoom in to images to help enrich their knowledge. In addition, the iPad was able to differentiate reading materials. For example, using a great search site, Buzzle.com, students found student friendly articles. Buzzle also provides the accessibility to listen to article. Therefore, students can use headphones while Buzzle reads aloud the article. During this class research time, I was able to set students up with the iPad and headphones to provide additional reading support. While the iPad was reading aloud the materials, these students could concentrate on taking important notes and benefited from the oral narration for reading fluency skills.

This tool has allowed us to provide immediate feedback on student work and track student goals. Using Google Drive and Engrade, I can track student assignments and provide comments for improvement. Circulating the classroom with the iPad increases the ability to record important student observations. Access to the online gradebook allows us to have a more up to date and accurate record of student work to help guide students in their school and homework.

Within the first two weeks with the iPad our class has already been opened up to a whole new world of opportunities. My students continue to recommend Apps for engagement and practice. This exposure to important technology already has made a difference in the attitudes towards innovation and creativity. Students give me feedback on how we can use the iPad to improve lessons. I am excited to learn with my students!

The impact of the iPad extends beyond technology. It provides a framework for endless opportunity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Janikis

  • Students Need News

    Funded Feb 12, 2013

Thank you once again for your generous support. Your donation to supply a subscription to "Junior Scholastic" is greatly appreciated by my school and my students.

Access to relevant news and current events is essential to our students academic and personal growth. This resource provides engaging articles that supplement our curriculum in English and Social Studies. In addition, students begin to question and investigate global issues.

When I introduced the students to their new news source they were ecstatic. Every student was immersed in their reading. You could feel the focus and engagement. After reading, each student selected their favorite article to write a short summary. Practicing this skill helps build reading comprehension and their ability to communicate new information. It was exciting to hear students discuss their current event topics!

Thank you again for sharing the gift of education. My students and I truly appreciate your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Janikis
