About a third of my students still need significant practice to become fluent readers, and one in five are reading at a first grade level. The challenge has only grown because we cannot conduct our regular in-person small groups. Third grade is the crucial time where students must be fluent readers or else risk falling permanently behind in the intermediate grades.  With your help, my rising third graders and I will have the materials we need to read fluently and unlock a world of possibility, even if instruction has to happen through a screen for the time being. This project will provide a Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) kit for small group instruction. It will give students their own reading practice booklets at their "just right" levels. These materials will challenge them without creating frustration. The SIPPS kit also comes with a full teacher handbook, helpful wall charts that students can refer to, and an assessment system so that students can track their progress and build their confidence. More importantly, because SIPPS routines are familiar and predictable for students, small group instruction will provide students with comfort of knowing what to expect in a world that feels uncertain. During an uncertain time, this project will benefit my students' mental health and unlock their reading potential!
