Desks on Demand!
Funded Nov 29, 2022We received our materials for "Desks on Demand" just before winter break. My students were very excited to open the three giant boxes in our classroom! They were eager to see what we had received and wanted me to put the seats together as soon as possible. It took me a couple days to do it, and it was worth it.
We were able to put everything to use for our final exam. Some students used the collapsable tables and we had to draw numbers to see who would use the two new desks. They are an excellent addition to our classroom. The two new desks are mobile and easily moved around the room as needed. These new materials are being used exactly as I had imagined...as the students have need. Most times everyone is content with our deskless space, but having options is wonderful.
Thank you for helping my students to have more choice in how they work in the classroom. We are all feeling the love and I feel like our learning environment is a more complete space.”

This classroom project was brought to life by an Anonymous Classroom Supporter and 2 other donors.Listen and Learn!
Funded Nov 27, 2019In February, we received our awesome headphones that YOU helped fund through Donor's Choose. Unfortunately, we sheltered in place soon after in March. We were not able to use our headphones; therefore, I could not get pictures of them being used in action. So I have decided to write and let you know about our future plans.
I teach Spanish 1A and 1B, and we are fortunate enough to have a class set of Chromebooks. My class sizes range from 30 to 38 students, so our incredible donation will allow each student to have a pair of headphones and allows me to incorporate more online learning opportunities for each student.
As soon as we are able to return to school and use the headphones in class, we will promptly be using them for activities through Pear Deck, Gimkit, Quizlet and Sr. Wooly and more. And even more exciting, we will be using the headphones to record speaking activities, and listen more closely to recorded native speakers online. These headphones will enhance their learning experience by making what they are listening to more clear to better comprehend Spanish. And being able to get practice listening to other Spanish speakers besides myself is such a gift. It acclimates my students to hearing accents of other people from within the language classroom.”

Wiggle While You Read!
Funded Oct 31, 2017Thanks to your kind donations, our classroom now receives a monthly subscription to Scholastic magazine. Each magazine has a two page weekly reader within. Now my students have a fresh item to read each week that is at their reading level. Spanish 1 students can have a difficult time reading because their skills are novice-mid level that need highly predictable language. The beauty of these weekly readers is that they are sin simple language and have themes and photos to make the reading more comprehensible.
We now have established a weekly reading time three a week. I am looking forward to watching their skills grow and grow. And of course, this reading time will also increase their ability to speak as they acquire new language.
The addition of four Wiggle chairs has been wonderful. For my students who need to move all day long, the ability to wiggle while they read is a real win! It gives students the movement they crave while remaining in place. These chairs, in a certain manner, make the information more accessible by meeting students' physical needs. Thank you so much for making our classroom a comfortable, engaging place to learn!”

Libros Needed... Our Class Library is Looking For More Variety
Funded Oct 24, 2016I would like to express my profound gratitude for your donations to our class library. Thanks to you, we received over 100 books in Spanish! Before this Donor's Choose project, we only had 13 books to choose from in a basket in the back of the class. There was not a whole lot we could do with these books as a class because we did not have enough books for every student to read individually. Instead, all I could do was offer students the option to read these books after completing quizzes while they waited for everyone to complete the quiz.
Thanks to your kindness, my students actually have the opportunity to read for pleasure as part of our regular class time. In a Spanish 1 class, students are open to discovery and have fun learning a new language for the first time. I want to keep their enthusiasm for learning fresh. So being able to offer the opportunity to read is a big deal, but giving students a wide variety to choose from is even better. Students are more eager when they have choice. The books we received from Donor's Choose vendors range from science books to cherished childhood books. And thirty of them have an accompanying CD for my students who are visually impaired and could use the audio assistance.
My students now "free read" at the beginning of class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I am watching students swell with pride over having been able to finish reading a "whole" book on their own. I love seeing students come in the room, and grab a book and grab a dictionary and go to their seats ready to read. Thank you for helping my students grow in language learning through reading.”

Mrs. Lowe
