My students possess a wealth of street savvy and survival skills but low literacy levels. I teach in an alternative high school located within a juvenile detention center. All of my students are adolescent males and most read significantly below their grade placement. These students are not drawn to the typical adolescent literature. They are drawn to current events and various types of nonfiction texts. The DK Eyewitness series offers engaging topics accompanied by great visuals and a text format that is appealing and accessible.
