Courage, Country, Loyalty, and Love: They Called Us Enemy

Funded Nov 28, 2023

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the generous donation that enabled the purchase of a course set of the graphic novel "They Called Us Enemy" for my classroom. The impact of this contribution on my students and their learning experiences will be profound.

The new texts will allow students to delve deeper into the historical context of Japanese incarceration during World War II, building upon the foundation laid by our current text, "Night." The exploration of how identities are shaped and reshaped by circumstances will be enriched, fostering critical thinking and empathy. The graphic novel serves as a unique medium for meaning-making, offering students the opportunity to analyze not only written language but also visual elements, enhancing their ability to comprehend complex narratives. Through the use of images, students can engage with the rich story in a more time-efficient manner compared to a standard novel.

In our classroom, students engage with the texts independently, in small groups for collaborative meaning-making, and as a whole class for impactful sections. I am confident that the discussions sparked by the graphic novel will be particularly poignant, shedding light on the shocking revelation that American citizens were deemed illegal by their own government during a critical period. Students will draw connections between these historical events and Elie Wiesel's experiences in "Night," delving into the moral complexities of living in exceptional times. Your support will not only broaden their understanding of history but also foster critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for diverse mediums of storytelling.

Once again, thank you for your generosity and commitment to enhancing the educational experience for my students. Your support makes a lasting impact on their academic journey—and next year's students, and on and on.”

With gratitude,

Ms. L-K
