Quite a few of my students are struggling readers. One on one, they are low in self esteem because they feel as though they are not as good as other students. The students attend an inner city public middle school. I don't allow anyone in my class to speak negatively about someone else, however, I cannot control what happens outside of my class. I have been told by my struggling readers that they are embarrassed to read aloud because they get teased and are told that students actually read the books they are reading in second grade. I feel if these students had a NOOK reader, no one could actually see what they are reading, and this is a way for their reading to increase, thereby progressively increasing their reading levels. This way when we have our silent reading activities, my struggling readers can participate without feeling inadequate. This will also help with reading comprehension, main ideas, and other reading skills that would otherwise not be achieved.
