  • Helping High School Female on Those Messy Days!

    Funded Dec 4, 2024

To many people what our students were needing is considered basic, daily necessities. However, a good portion of my female students don't have the ability to obtain the basic hygiene items that they need. Many of my female students avoid coming to school during their monthly cycle just because they didn't have the proper items they needed. Your donation has changed that for so many of my girls. Because of your donation my female students know they have a safe place to go when they are needing anything during those "messy days". They are more confident and able to focus on coming to school to learn, instead of worrying about having an embarrassing moment in front of their peers.

My girls were very excited to see all of the supplies that we received. It has increased my student attendance in my female population and helps them worry less about how they will take care of themselves during their cycle. My "Help Yourself Shelf" is set up in an area so that students have access to it anytime they need something. They don't have to ask me they just know where to go. While they don't have to actually speak to me or see me I can see and hear them coming in and out when they are grabbing things from the shelf. My favorite thing has been my students bringing in other students to show them where they can go to get "help". Just this week I listened as one girl brought in another girl and showed her where she can grab whatever she needed. The way my heart was so grateful that because of your donation was much more than just supplies. It opened up a space for girls can look out for each other, and just like our donor Devoted Reader stated, being a woman is powerful, and shouldn't be shameful or embarrassing. Having this safe area allowed them a space not to have to be embarrassed or ashamed. Just confident that they are girls who have what they need to take care of themselves.

While I did focus this project on students who couldn't afford supplies these items come in handy for all of our girls. Because sometimes surprises just happen! This has led to conversations with some of my students who can afford just a little bit more, and how they like having the supplies there just incase and they have been inspired to hopefully keep our shelf stocked. It brought out ambition in the girls to try to all take care of each other and hopefully leading to more projects so we can continue taking care of our girls, even on those messy days!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Roach

  • High School Is Hard, But Poor Hygiene Makes It Harder

    Funded Aug 12, 2024

As a high school counselor in a low socioeconomic community it is important to me that my students have access to everything that they may need while at school, and outside of school. I have seen first hand the impact of what having poor hygiene can do to a high school student. Many of our students don't choose to have poor hygiene, but just can't afford the items needed to take care of themselves.

The donation you made to my project "High School is Hard, but Poor Hygiene Makes it Harder has made a tremendous impact for my students. I keep a "help yourself shelf" located in a private area of my office so students can just grab what they need for the day. It often runs low because we struggle to find money to keep it stocked. However, that is not the case this year. I have plenty of supplies for my students to grab what they need and keep it in their backpacks, take it home, or just run in to use during a quick emergency. My high school students know if they forget their deodorant, or just didn't have deodorant at all that it is an item that can easily be grabbed in my office. No toothbrush or toothpaste? Something they can now easily grab and continue about their day and that is all because of you. My students were so excited to see all of the supplies stocked for them this year. I truly believe that has helped increase attendance and overall performance in our school because students no longer have to worry about not having the supplies they need to take care of themselves.

I would love to continue to offer these types of supplies to my students throughout the day, but also be able to create hygiene bags for students to grab once a week or so they can take them home to make sure they have these supplies before coming to school instead of getting them after they come to school!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Roach

  • Helping Our Female Students Is Important, Period!

    Funded Aug 12, 2024

As a high school counselor in a low socioeconomic community it is important to me that my students have access to everything that they may need while at school. Closes to my heart are my female students, who often do not have access to feminine hygiene products that a lot of people consider a basic necessity. I have a lot of female students who will miss school during their menstrual cycle just because they don't have the proper supplies to help take care of themselves during their period.

The donation you made to my project "Helping our Female Students is Important, Period!" has made a tremendous impact for my students. I keep a "help yourself shelf" located in a private area of my office so students can just grab what they need for the day. It often runs low because we struggle to find money to keep it stocked. However, that is not the case this year. I have plenty of feminine supplies to keep my shelf stocked all year around. The reaction from the girls has been priceless. They were excited to have so much on their shelf. I have girls who come straight to my office in the mornings to grab what they need for the day, and many that will stop by at the end of the day so that they can have plenty at home for the night. I have an older student who had her younger sister start her freshman year and she brought her to my shelf and made sure to tell her that if she ever needed anything to come to this shelf. My heart melted because the older girl knew I would do anything to take care of my students and she wanted to make sure her little sister knew that too. The attendance of our female students has increased and I truly believe that we have you all to think for that.

We would love to expand on our "Help yourself shelf" and be able to provide feminine health care products directly in our restrooms for our girls, for free. We hope to be able to expand on this project one day and hopefully get dispensers to stock in our restrooms, and continue to provide free menstrual items to our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Roach

WOW!! My class and I will never be able to say thank you enough for your donation. With your funding, my class and I received two ipad minis with their protective cases and we have been loving them ever since.

Since we have received the ipad minis we have been able to access many different science apps, "Bill Nye the Science Guy" app being their favorite, as well as different types of space apps that have taken their learning to a entire new level. The students are more engaged in the lessons and get very excited when they know the lesson will include the ipad time.

I might add that I was able to access many science books using the ipad minis and my students who are not usually big readers LOVE to grab the ipad and read the newest science book I have found. What a difference you have made in our class. Thank you so much for your donation, we are very appreciative of all that you have done!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Roach

    Funded Oct 24, 2012

I will never be able to explain how much I appreciate your donation to my classroom. With your donation I was able to purchase a microscope as well as various slides for my students to view. Their faces lit up when they looked into the microscope and could see first hand what they had only seen in pictures up to that point! Their excitement was indescribable!

Along with the microscope I also purchased measuring utensils for the students to use for many experiments. We have already used the tools to form crystals during a rocks and minerals lesson and can not wait to use them for all of the many experiments we have coming up in the future.

Once again, I thank you so much for your donation. It has allowed my students the opportunities to become engaged in their education which is priceless to their education.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Roach

Many of my students come from low income families with limited experiences when it comes to hands on science activities. Hands on activities and visual aids created with technology help these students become excited about science. Because the students often do not have the opportunity to experience science lessons outside the classroom, I hope to create an experience in the classroom that will help keep them engaged and excited about learning.
