  • Expand Our Brains Explode With BrainPop!

    Funded Mar 2, 2024

It's been wonderful watching my students light up when they see "Tim and Moby". These are the two main characters associated with BrainPop. They area human and a robot who are just this side of goofy, but who answer questions written by students in a way that my students truly enjoy!

Since we received this DonorsChoose project, we have used a variety of sources about the American Revolution. We had studied the origins of the through district based resources and had learned quite a bit, but I wanted to see how much was retained.

I picked a wrap up video about the reasons for the Revolution and the students enthusiastically participated. What's wonderful, though, is at the end of each video is a ten question quiz. We used white boards so students could answer themselves. With this, I was able to take a quick assessment to see what knowledge was retained and what I might have to go over again.

Every time Tim and Moby come up, the kids get excited, as they know the pattern that is used in the video. More surprisingly, they are excited to take the quiz at the end to show off their knowledge! Thank you so very much for allowing me to bring this resource to my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tolub

  • Teacher, May I Listen to My Learning?

    Funded Nov 4, 2022

I just have to say thank you for the gift of this donation. You wouldn't believe what an impact headphones have in a self differentiated classroom!

My students are now able to just reach for a set of headphones that they know are useable, stylish (yes, that matters to teens!), and are available at any time. When we are in centers, students are able to focus in to the research or program that they are working on without being interrupted. For my students that need to have distraction in order to work, they are able to put on music as background noise and continue to be fully involved in their work.

It's such a simple piece of technology, but has made such a change for the better in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tolub

  • Finding Our Place in the World!

    Funded Oct 29, 2021

Our students have eagerly been working with the new map. As we have been working on ancient river civilizations, it's been a way to show our students the distances to these far away lands and to recognize that the rivers have been in these places for thousands of years. Showing how the geography impacts the land around these rivers with the maps has been amazing!

The globe is a regular part of the day - even if it is not part of my daily work. Spinning and watching where their fingers land to find out where they might live in the future gives them a sense of the different countries and the amount of travel they might do to go to their future "homes". This game has become a part of our indoor recess.

Having updated maps and globes is just a relief. Showing the current countries allows us to have a worldview that is up to date, rather than looking at countries that don't even exist any longer. These donations allow my students, who may not move far from where they have grown up, allow themselves to travel through their new globe and map.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tolub

My maps are used all the time in my social studies classroom! However, the maps that I possess are woefully out of date. I hate giving misinformation to my students or try to have them understand where a country is now, when the borders are incorrect. When we are discussing the sale and distance, rolling down the map gives an example of the vast amount miles there are between our city and London, Paris, Rome or Kiev. Looking at the map and finding out where their families come from and how they got to United States is always a joy. Learning cardinal directions, geography and and various other map skills on a large map, make distances come alive with my children. Showing them, rather than telling them make all the difference! Having a physical map that is current is essential in my classroom! If they aren't able to afford the actual travel, why can't they at least know where they want to go?
