We are a suburban school (K-6) and my sixth graders mentor a second grade class along with a primary special needs class. Our kids run a plant business each year, but very few of the children truly understand much about the vegetables and herbs we grow. For many children, this is their first experience even working with soil let alone actually cooking with fresh produce. We hope to blend the history of food, the joy of cooking, the science behind the food, and improve our reading, writing and math skills. Most importantly, this is a way for our sixth, second, and first through third grade children to connect and create memories. We plan on creating a cookbook featuring our favorite recipes to pass out during our annual plant sale. Our small classroom garden along with parent support would easily provide the basic food ingredients; however, the equipment is a challenge. Just imagine vegetarian chili, homemade yogurt, fresh fruit smoothies and homemade pizza (with fresh dough) in a classroom!
