Walk into any kindergarten class and you will see that the students do not just sit at desks and tables. They work sitting on pillows, in nooks, and most often, they are sitting on the floor. The floor is where they have room to spread out materials to explore and learn. They could be doing learning puzzles, solving math problems in groups, peer editing writing, buddy reading, or conducting a science experiment. One thing is for sure, kindergarten students love and enjoy being on the floor and feeling comfortable while learning.
Kindergarten students enjoy being on the floor because it where they feel the most "at home." With the special requested rug, my students will be able to have that "at home" feeling while learning. In my class, the students will utilize the rug for whole group activities and small group activities. We will use the rug to start our morning routine where we come together as a "family" to greet each other and share our feelings. Students will enjoy active lessons in phonics, reading, and math on the rug, sitting with their classmates. During these lessons, students get to turn and discuss topics with their peers and help each other solve problems. Most of all, they will love listening to stories on the rug. They will be able to experience the books while sitting closely with their classmates, sharing ideas, feelings, and their own personal experiences about the stories. This rug will make story time even more special. Having the requested rug will only help elevate the sense of community that I strive to accomplish each day with my students. The rug will help create a positive learning environment where the students feel "at home" while learning at school.
