In today's climate it is imperative the we teach financial literacy to our students. I teach speech and oral communications, but I constantly bring in economics, personal finance and real world concepts into my classroom. Why? My students are from low socio-economic backgrounds, and they need to become well informed. It's my job as their teacher to expose them to concepts and skills to make them successful in the future. Each week they make an oral presentation as a stock analyst of a stock they have researched for the week. Based on their research, they suggest whether that stock is a buy, sell, or hold. It ties in to all my standards, and makes my students so much more aware of what is going on in the economy and how it impacts them. the importance of supply and demand, and how to successfully report to peers and the community successes and failures of their diversified portfolios. Our school is hoping that The Stock Market Game will help yield substantial gains in student achievement in the areas of Mathematics and Financial Literacy as well as presentations in Public Speaking. The gains will be measured by several standardized tests given throughout the school year. We believe The Stock Market Game is a way to motivate our students to learn "real life" investment in a fun way. We had a team in the Spring place first in The Stock Market Game thanks to your support.
