My students are from the East Detroit Public School District in Eastpointe, Michigan. This year I will be instructing eighth graders in the Kelly Advanced Learning Program using an accelerated curriculum. Our students do not have a lot of money and resources are hard to secure. The students see college in their future and need strong reading and writing skills to be eligible for scholarships. They need challenging texts and a dedicated teacher. I want to be the teacher; I just need the texts! I will be teaching a unit on the Holocaust. I want my students to understand the various points of view of this time in history as well as the harmful and devastating effects of racism and oppression. The novels I am requesting will help my students understand these effects as well as how they can be connected to their own lives. I will also be able to enhance the novel with many different high-level informational texts. As a result, their reading and writing skills should improve.
