  • Readers Make Leaders

    Funded Aug 29, 2022

Thank you again for donating to my classroom project. Our reading groups are SO much fun this year with our new materials! My students love practicing their letter sounds and letter formation in the sand. They also really enjoy using their own individual mirrors to watch what their mouth looks like when they are saying new letter sounds. Students have been using their bumpy writing screens to help memorize sight words as well. These materials, along with whiteboards and tiles, are used daily in my instruction. My students love using these materials and are learning to read using a multi sensory approach thanks to you! They have made huge progress already this year and I can't wait to see their growth in June. Thank you for helping us make reading fun!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Medairos

  • Get Those Wiggles Out- Flexible Seating for First Graders

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

Your donations have made for such a wonderful school year so far! My first graders are using all of the materials that you donated on a daily basis. I have a group of sixteen students. Six of those students are students with special education services. The materials that you helped me purchase are so beneficial for all of my students.

The crowd favorite is definitely the six wobble chairs! I use these chairs at my teacher table where students get small group instruction in both reading and math. These chairs allow the students to keep their bodies moving while still sitting at a table. They love sitting in the fun chairs to get their work completed! The class also loves using the llama lap desks to complete paper jobs in the classroom. They love the independence and choice that this option brings them. Lastly, I've been blown away by the success of their individual writing journals! Each student is writing in their journal daily about science, personal experiences, listing facts, and so much more. The journal is a great piece that I get to show parents at parent teacher conferences as well.

We are going to continue to use these materials daily in our classroom. We are all so thankful for your generosity and kindness (something I try to teach my students as well). Thank you so very much from all of us!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Medairos

  • Phonics for First Grade

    Funded Oct 20, 2017

My students are using our FUNdations letter boards and white boards every day! These boards help my students have a hands on experience building and making words. The students can then take it one step further and use those words to make sentences on the white boards. Their handwriting has improved greatly since they have been using the white boards with special key pictures on their writing lines.

Using these kits does not feel like work to my students. They are excited to get their hands on them and use them to learn each new weekly skill.

I can't thank you enough for providing my first graders with these wonderful kits for not only this year, but for many years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Medairos

  • Successful First Graders

    Funded Aug 25, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for all the materials that you donated to our classroom! We use every material, every day! Each student has their very own writing journal that they keep in their desk. We work on writing daily to help the students with their spelling and expression of thoughts and ideas. This journal is also used to show progress from September to June. I can't wait to see the finished product in June! Our class also uses the special computer paper that you donated to us daily for Sight Word practice. The paper stays in each child's homework folder, and they practice the important words every night at home. Lastly, we LOVE our new book display! Every month, I am able to display all the thematic books that we will read. The students love picking a book from the book display to listen to.

Without your help, we wouldn't have all these wonderful materials! My students are learning and having fun because of your generosity. THANK YOU for supporting our class!”

  • First Grade Field Trip to the Theater

    Funded Dec 16, 2015

    Dear Donors,

I really can't begin to thank you all for your generosity, but I will try. Thank you for sending the entire first grade student body on a field trip. Thank you for paying for that student who's parent wouldn't have been able to. Thank you for providing some students with their very first bus ride. Thank you for getting our city students, out of their own city and into a new one for a brand new experience. Thank you for allowing them to learn new behaviors for a setting that is foreign to them. Thank you for fostering their love of reading and investment in their favorite story book character, Junie B. Jones. Thank you for giving these students the opportunity to see that character come alive in the theater. Thank you for being kind, generous, thoughtful, compassionate, and so much more! As teachers, we try our best to teach these children as much as we can for the 180 days that we have them, but we couldn't have made such an impact without your help. I will never forget your kindness, and my students will never forget their very first field trip. THANK YOU!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Medairos

  • IPad Mini for Mini Learners

    Funded Aug 23, 2014

My students and I are absolutely in love with our new mini iPads. They are used daily by every single student in my classroom. I have discovered some great apps that are allowing my students to explore reading, science, and math in an interactive way.

When my students were first introduced to the iPads, they couldn't wait to get their hands on them! Since the first day of school, they have learned to be responsible with their iPad and we have been able to use them in the most effective way possible. Each student gets to use the iPad for 15-20 minutes every day.

These iPads have improved student engagement in my classroom. They are excited to use them and learn every day. We can't thank you enough for your generosity, it has made a huge difference in our classroom. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”

  • First Grade Writers and More

    Funded Mar 29, 2014

My students and I are absolutely loving our new Writing journals, books, and more. When my students first received their journals they were very excited. They couldn't believe that they each had their own journal and were going to be able to keep them in their desk. They were also excited when I told them they would be able to take it home at the end of the year to share with their family. My students are also enjoying listening to several books provided by you.

We are using these resources every single day! During ELA centers, students go to their "Work on Writing" center and work on the writing prompt for the day. Throughout the day, our pencils get lots of use so they need to be sharpened nightly with our new pencil sharpener! Our time on learning has increased because we do not need to take time out of our day to find a new pencil and ask the teacher next door to use her pencil sharpener. Lastly, we finish our day listening to a new book.

Having these journals and books available to my students has boosted their learning in many ways. The writing journal gives all students the chance to experiment with their own writing as they are learning to put their thoughts onto paper. It is helping them with their letter formation, spelling, conventions, and organization.

A huge thank you goes out to you for making this happen for my students!”

  • Reading Rockstars

    Funded Jun 14, 2013

When my students entered my classroom this year, they were welcomed with a brand new classroom library. They were so excited to read books that they were interested in and were in great condition.

The students use the classroom library every single day. Part of the 5 daily centers that the students go to every day during ELA is "Read to Self'. At this center, the students get to pick a book at their own reading level and read to themselves on a bean bag or the classroom rug. The students are motivated to practice reading the books at their level to become fluent in them which will enable them to move on to the next level.

The leveled library has boosted my teaching because I can now easily keep track of each student's reading level and monitor their progress throughout the year. I now have the ability to provide each child with a new book at their exact reading level. I have seen the most reading progress from these students than I ever have.

I could never thank you enough for your generous donation. Your kind donation will help many first graders for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Medairos

  • Fabulous First Graders

    Funded Aug 6, 2013

My students and I are absolutely loving our new Math and Writing journals. When my students first received their journals they were very excited. They couldn't believe that they each had their own journal and were going to be able to keep them in their desk. They were also excited when I told them they would be able to take it home at the end of the year.

We are using these resources every single day! During ELA centers, students go to their "Work on Writing" center and work on the writing prompt for the day. When Math comes around in the afternoon, we often answer a word problem together as a class and each student writes in their journal. They love using these journals!

Having these journals available to my students has boosted their learning in many ways. The writing journal gives all students the chance to experiment with their own writing as they are learning to put their thoughts onto paper. It is helping them with their letter formation, spelling, conventions, and organization. Our math journals are helping the students to represent word problems with pictures, make number sentences, and formulate an answer.

A huge thank you goes out to you for making this happen for my students!”

    Mrs. Medairos

Some of my students come from homes that do not have any books. Teaching in an urban school district, it is important to me to expose my students to as many books, genres and levels that I can. My students attend a large school with large classroom sizes. It would be extremely beneficial to them if they had access to a variety of books right inside their own classroom.
