Reading Nonfiction With Scholastic News
Funded Dec 6, 2016I was so excited when my request was funded and equally excited to share the new magazine subscription with my students. As soon as I showed them our first monthly bundle that had arrived, they were elated to start using them!
We have been utilizing them in many different ways. One way is "Part of Nonfiction" labeling, such as title, header, diagram, caption, word type (bold, highlighted, italicized), etc. Now, every time that we read a magazine (or any other nonfiction text), they love to find the different parts! We, of course, also use the magazine to help us with comprehension skills with nonfiction texts!
There isn't a week that goes by that we don't use our magazines. I can always tie in our Scholastic News magazines with what "theme" we are learning, since many of the issues relate to the seasons, monthly holidays or events. Thank you so much for helping to engage my students in their learning!”

Exploration and STEM Activities
Funded Jan 22, 2017I was so excited when my request was funded. Equally excited to share the new materials with my students. I immediately opened the boxes and shared with the students all of the fun "games" we will be able to put in our morning rotations.
I started off with the Magnet Trix, with one group. They worked together to follow the directions on the card, problem solve, and analyze what to change to make it work. The class cheered them on as the first track was being "tested." It has quickly become a favorite activity! I have seen them collaborate with partners and really problem solve any of the activities they are working on. I am so excited to see how they grow in their critical thinking!
I am very thankful that this project was funded!”

Bright Colors Sparking Interest in Students
Funded May 17, 2015I am very excited to get to use these resources! We have been able to use the paper with so many activities so far! My students were so excited to see all of the bright and colorful paper arrive. We have been able to use them to help with math and phonics activities. The bright paper make it so much more inviting to students - they get excited to complete the activities when they get the bright paper. It also helps to keep us organized, knowing that the different color papers were for certain activities, so the pieces that are cut out get put with their proper activity.
Thank you again for helping to enrich the education of my class!”

Making Number Sense with Ten Frames
Funded Aug 22, 2014I am very excited to get to use these resources! I have not received the entire project yet, but we have been able to use the parts that we have gotten so far. My students were so excited to see the jumbo ten frames arrive. We have been able to use them help with addition and subtraction strategies. The jumbo ten frames and dots make it so much easier to teach in a whole group situation, so that everyone is able to see. The kids love being able to manipulate the dots to figure out the questions. It has become one of the favorite center activities to do!
Thank you again for helping to enrich the education of my class!”

The Tools for Success: VersaTiles!
Funded May 30, 2014I was so excited when my request was funded. Equally excited to share the new materials with my students. I immediately labeled all the tiles so that we could keep them nice and organized when we started working with them.
We started off with one of the basic activities in the math set, just so the students could learn how to use the versatiles. Now, we use them in our whole group instruction and as center activities. It has quickly become a favorite activity! They ask all the time if they can do the VersaTiles, which I love because it means they want to do activities that help them learn! The best part is, they don't even realize it's work because they like it so much.
I am very thankful that this project was funded!”

The Importance of Fluency
Funded Oct 8, 2013I was so excited when my request was funded and equally excited to share the new materials with my students. As soon as I showed them our new materials, they were elated to start using them!
We have been utilizing them in many different ways. One way is for our centers work. They listen to the fluency stories and then they get to read the stories, trying to imitate how they were read. We also do something called "Peer to Peer" fluency where the students time each other read passages and use the dry erase markers to mark their errors and where they stop. They also love doing the timed-sight word activity packs. They love to try and beat their time!
There isn't a day that goes by that we don't use timers, markers, and fluency activities. Whether it's for centers, small groups with me, or whole group, my students are always completely involved with their learning. Thank you so much for helping to engage my students in their learning!”

Morning Meeting Activities
Funded Jun 19, 2013I was so excited when my request was funded and equally excited to share the new materials with my students. As soon as I showed them our new materials, they were elated to start using them!
We have been utilizing them in many different ways. One way is for our morning meeting message. Students read what our day will entail to give them a preview of what is to come. Another way that we use the materials is for vocabulary practice. Students are able to use the chart paper as an interactive vocabulary and fluency practice for our stories. We also use the charts for interactive reading comprehension charts; such as compare and contrast or discussing what questions we may have before reading an informational article.
There isn't a day that goes by that we don't use our chart paper or white boards. Whether it's for spelling, vocabulary, reading, math or our morning meeting messages, my students are always interacting with their learning. Thank you so much for helping to engage my students in their learning!”

Helping to Create Young Authors
Funded Mar 20, 2013I was so excited when my request was funded and I was equally excited to share the new equipment with my students. We had been working on our writing project for a few months already, and were ready to finalize the book by publishing it!
My students handed in their writing pages, which they glued to the cardstock, and I laminated the pages and bound their books with the binding machine. They were overly-excited to see their writing become "published" books! Since we were able to bind their books, I have decided to enter their writing into our school Quality Literature contest, which will then go to our district's contest! The students are so excited to get their books entered into the writing contest.
I have also been able to make the students their own personal spelling book, laminating the front and back cover for durability and binding the books together. The students are already eager to write all their new words in their spelling books, which is a great source for their future writing, too! Again, I can not thank you enough for your generosity!”

Mrs. Ross
