The books that I have chosen encourage students to generate ideas by studying the craft of writers in well-written picture books. Each of the books selected for this project demonstrate that writers have a story to tell! For example, Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street tackles the issue of students expressing that they have nothing to write about. In the book Thank you, Mr. Falker, Patricia Polacco has a strong command on word choice and her illustrations alone can evoke a strong emotion! The book describes what can happen to a student when teachers miss important clues about student progress and how one person can change another person's life. Through the Cracks explores how dismal school can be when it doesn't work, i.e. it has become a place where student's needs are not first and the activities are not stimulating. A Bad Case of Stripes reminds readers to be okay with who you are and it also shows that finding ideas to write about can be generated from a small moment. I want to build my student's confidence as writers because I know that they all have a story to tell, and that they have the ability to tell it. By placing quality picture books in the hands of my students I will empower them to chose writing as an art form to express themselves and tell their story.
