  • Building Young Activists

    Funded Jan 2, 2021

Our first grade students learned about Civil Rights activists in this unit. With the books you helped purchase, they studied Shirley Chisholm, the Lovings, Kamala Harris, the Greensboro Four, Rosa Parks, and Georgia Gilmore. In each book, they identified the problem and type of activism that was used to help solve the problem. They learned about the Civil Rights Act and voting rights. They learned how protesting and working together can change laws and make things more fair. They were able to make connections from history to present day and transferred the learnings and skills to their writing, where they wrote to be activists.

In the classroom, we read to gain information from books during this unit. Students created art and bulletin boards displays, and connected the learning to writing and history. Students also transferred the learning in class lessons to their independent reading.

In connection with the books in this unit, students learned protest songs that were sung during the civil rights movement. And they learned popular songs at that time like Young, Gifted, and Black by Nina Simone and Say It Loud: I'm Black and I'm Proud by James Brown- which has now become a class favorite.

We are hopeful the skills and lessons learned in this unit will last a lifetime. And we thank you for your support.”

  • Recess Refresh: First Grade Collective Action Project

    Funded Apr 14, 2021

Thank you so much for contributing to our collective action project: Recess Refresh. Not only will these supplies help students in our school enjoy a stimulating and engaging indoor recess period, but now students know that their voice matters and that they can make a positive change in their community.”

  • Fascinating First Grade Series Books

    Funded Sep 16, 2020

Thank you so much for contributing to my project. Last year, I decided to move up with my class from Kindergarten to First Grade due to the uncertainties of the pandemic. However, that meant the kids and I would stay in the same classroom. I wanted to reinvent the library so they would have first grade books to choose from. With your help, when they entered the classroom for blended learning, they had so many new, exciting books in the library that were first grade appropriate, both in content and reading structure.

The series books provide a great deal of interest to my first graders. And while reading them they are able to use word strategies that we are teaching in first grade. The sight word bank is bigger, comprehension skills are higher, and because names and themes repeat in these series books, they are able to practice these skills across books, while maintaining a sense of joy, wonder, and connection.

The Biscuit series has been very popular!! It's exciting for me to see a reader who was on level C, being so fascinated with these (level F) books that she is reading them over and over, reading accurately and fluently. Mo! has also been a popular choice. When we shut down recently in NYC, students were able to take these books home in their book baggies. I'm looking forward to them coming back into the classroom soon to read more and more of these series books.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Katy

  • Warming-Up Life Long Skills in Classy Track Suits

    Funded Apr 2, 2007

I would like to thank you for your incredible generosity and faith in our track team. We are a track team with a lot of talent, commitment and dedication. But the one thing we truly needed was running gear. You have provided us with that. I know the students will be thrilled when they receive these track suits. They will be well deserved because the children work to their full potential and stretch their limits as they grow to be better runners and better people. Thank you again for your generous gift”

  • Uniforms for a Growing Harlem Track Team- Part 2

    Funded Sep 9, 2005

The uniforms that you have provided for my track team bring the children such delight. In a school that has minimal athletics, the track team represents health and vitality that youth so desperately need these days. The children will look professional as they wear the uniforms in races. It will bring them a sense of team pride.

I thank you very, very much for your kind donation. It means so much to me that there are people out there like you supporting children and schools who do not have plentiful resources.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Catherine Sulliva”

  • Uniforms for a Growing Harlem Track Team-- Part 1

    Funded Apr 25, 2005

The track team that I started up and coach in Harlem is presently the only athletic team at the school. In this community there are few athletic teams and virtually no athletic clubs for girls. The runners on the team are enthusiastic and proud of their accomplishments. We have built a strong and motivational team by teaching kids sportsmanship and team building. The one thing the runners needed (we still have kids running in jeans) were nice uniforms with the school emblem in which to compete. Now, with your help, the children can run in style and with pride.

Thank you so much for your donation. It means a lot to the school community!

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Catherine Sulliva”

Our local school, pre-k to 2, is consolidating with our neighboring school, grades 3-5. We are expanding our lower school vision: that hands-on engineering learning will lead students to love learning, make important contributions, be flexible, resilient, and creative thinkers. We want this vision to be alive and we want to create cohesiveness among the curriculums and classrooms. The science notebooks are a safe space for students to record what they did, show evidence, create math graphs, draw and write vocabulary words, ask questions, wonder, and observe. Science is about communicating. The grids in the notebook provide structure for scientific thinking and recording, and for teachers to use as a tool for next steps in their instruction. As a teacher who believes in our vision, I am hoping to provide resources to the new teachers to use in organizing their curricula and student work. The folders will provide cohesiveness for all students to store their writing, math, reading, and science project work in a similar way in all the classrooms. The plastic is durable and the folders can be reused for multiple years. The three prongs on the inside are useful for holding student tools, such as wordlists and checklists in writing. The post-it notes, for the reading and writing curriculum, are a tool for students across the school to revise their writing and add their thoughts to what they are reading in books. The post-it notes also help to make students thinking visible. While basic materials may seem boring, they are essential to day to day teaching in the classroom. At a public school with a tight budget, we are looking forward to being organized and portraying our students' work in a cohesive manner. Thank for supporting our public school!
