I teach in a low income neighborhood with resources and funds available to my students. Currently there are 13 students enrolled in my middle school class, where students are academically functioning between the preschool and second grade levels. My curriculum is pieced together to meet the needs of my special education students, but is often left over from the general population and often missing many components. My students have disabilities, including autism, down syndrome, and other health impairments, causing some of them to have significant speech and language delays. Many of my students show a lot of learning potential, but because they do not have a way of communicating, it is difficult to see growth. Despite their learning disabilities, they are provided with a rigorous and challenging learning environment. It is important to me that they are not cheated out of maximizing their potential just because of the cards life has dealt them.
