  • We're Well-Read Year 3

    Funded Aug 11, 2015

The 4th grade students (and their families!) are so grateful for your gifts! They enjoy reading about current events and brushing up on their non fiction reading skills using the Scholastic News Magazines. The class reads a weekly edition over the weekend and shares the resource with their families. Often, there is a play script included that relates to the history curriculum. The ELL and learning disabled students have a great time reenacting historical moments in our nation's story while practicing their oral skills. Your gift is most appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.

  • Calling all Supplies!

    Funded May 5, 2015

Our students were so excited and happy to receive the resources. As an inclusion class, 40% of the class is special education students and they learn better using an individual white board at their desks. Before receiving the resources students were using markers that did not write well and that were low on ink. After receiving the new markers the students were so pleased they could have dependable markers to use that they can use. We also had a very old sharpener that would make a lot of noise and never turned off! So it had to be plugged in and unplugged with each use! We had to unplug it when it was not being used which forced our students to bring in their own individual sharpeners. This only made a big mess in the classroom. With the new sharpener the students do not need their individual sharpener and the room stays clean!

We have been working on Westward Expansion and our bulletin board was very plain. The students were very excited to see the new borders and said that it made their writing look even better. We hope to keep the borders and signs in good condition so that we can reuse them when we teach Westward Expansion next year to our incoming fifth-graders.

It's donors like you who truly make a difference in our children's lives!!!! Thank you for all your support! Have a wonderful summer!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.

  • We're Well Read!!!

    Funded Aug 19, 2012

It has been two months now since we have received our Scholastic News magazines and we are enjoying them immensely every week! My students look forward to receiving them each Friday so they can share them with their families over the weekend. The articles are engaging to the kids, as well as, the adults! The children hold onto the magazines long after we have read and discussed the issues.

Know that your donation has made a tremendous impact on our students. One hundred percent of our student body is low income and struggles to provide basic needs. Many of the students in my class are English language learners, who have no exposure to English at home. Their literary resources are very limited and many spend their free time watching Spanish television. We encourage the students to visit the local library and try to arrange class visits monthly. However, our local library has been moved and hasn't reopened for a month.

As we prepare our students for the New York State ELA Exam, the magazines are indispensable. A large portion of the test questions are non fiction. By exposing our students to varied non fiction reading selections since September, we hope that they will feel most comfortable and well prepared to do their best on the state exam in the spring.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.

Our class is primarily English Language Learners and Special Education students with IEPs and related services. Our school population is 100% free school lunches, which reflects the impoverished state of income of these parents. Many of our children are latchkey children who spend most of their free time watching television and playing video games.
