  • Newsies R Us Year 6

    Funded Aug 31, 2024

Your donation to our class's Scholastic News subscription has made a huge difference already! We are looking forward to utilizing the materials that will enhance our students' learning experience. Our students have diverse backgrounds. Many of the children are English Language Learners and also students with learning disabilities. The resources that Scholastic News provides enables our students to access this information in a clear and enjoyable manner. The students are provided with vocabulary slides that introduce the more difficult words with a picture and supporting sentence. There are short videos for each magazine that are related to the main article and really help our auditory and visual learners. They also provide graphic organizers, open ended questions, essay prompts and multiple choice questions that help prepare the students for the New York State ELA exam.

Our parents also thank you, as almost all of our students are from immigrant backgrounds and their families struggle financially. We always used the Scholastic News resource but were forced to collect $10 from each student at the start of each school year. Your generous donation alleviates this added cost for our families.

    Thanks so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.

  • Keep Chillin!

    Funded May 1, 2023

Thanks so much for your generous donation. The students in my class were most excited to grow herbs in the classroom. In the heat of June, they were able to refrigerate the harvest to be used later. The students also experimented with various liquids, such as, juice, milk, coffee and soda to see how the different liquids affected the growth of their aloe and other succulent plants. Having a place to store the materials for use and experimentation was most convenient.

The students are also encouraged to bring healthy snacks and lunches that may need to be refrigerated. We are always promoting a healthy lifestyle and are sure that the habits the students develop in elementary and middle school will grow with them into adulthood.

Thanks for making a huge difference in our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.

  • Classroom Made Beautiful!

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Your contributions to beautify our classroom are much appreciated. We work really hard during our readers, writers, math, science and social studies workshops to learn the curriculum and show what we know in creative ways. your donations help us present our learning in an inviting and appealing way. This develops our pride and encourages us to work even harder. Our bulletin boards reflect our efforts and we no longer struggle keeping our work displayed thanks to the Command hooks and double sided tape we received. We use the colored stock paper to enhance our learning to help us color code and to display our work in a creative way.

Wishing you much success in all your endeavors!”

  • Newsies R Us Year 4!

    Funded Mar 25, 2022

Our school population is 100% free school lunches, which reflects the impoverished state of income of these parents. Many of our children are latch-key children who spend most of their free time watching television and playing video games.

We hope to broaden our students' horizons and motivate them to engage in reading non-fiction (especially the boys, many of whom are reluctant readers). The Scholastic News Magazines will also help prepare the students for the New York State Test. In the past, we have found our students eager to read the Scholastic News. We have found their on-line resources most valuable in supporting our teaching. Through use of the Scholastic News magazines and related reading material, we will conduct reader's theater and role-playing to reenact historical events.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.

  • Newsies R Us Year 3!

    Funded Apr 22, 2021

Our students greatly benefit from the non-fiction articles and interesting news tidbits that are presented in Scholastic News Magazine. These magazines expose their families to current events in the English language, as well. By reading Scholastic News articles, the students are also preparing for the New York State ELA Exam since the questions and activities that accompany the magazine are all aligned with the new Common Core Standards. The subscription also provides the class with access to informational videos related to the cover stories. This is extremely helpful to our students that are new to the English language, as well as, the learners who benefit from auditory and visual supports.

We hope to broaden our students' horizons and motivate them to engage in reading non-fiction (especially the boys, many of whom are reluctant readers). Our students are most eager to read the Scholastic News and watch the accompanying video clips and vocabulary slides We have found their on-line resources most valuable in supporting our teaching. • Newsies R Us Year 2

    Funded May 5, 2020

During this most difficult time in our lives, the donation you have made to our class subscription to Scholastic News has made a huge impact on our learning! Our sixth grade class was only back in class 1-2 per week (if they chose the hybrid remote schedule), before our school found itself in a red zone and went completely remote without even a day's notice! Thanks to this wonderful resource from Scholastic. we have been able to keep our students engaged in meaningful learning.

The magazines provide an online digital version with a "read to me" option. The new vocabulary is introduced in a slide show. There are engaging video clips that build up the students' background knowledge and are most supportive for our students with learning disabilities, language delays, or English Language Learners. Each article is written in a most engaging manner with supportive info graphs, maps, photos, sidebars. The students have a chance to respond and show what they know by using the included skills sheets that link directly to our google classroom. The students are most engaged and look forward to our lessons each Friday as a chance to catch up with current events and loads of nonfiction reading.

Wishing you and your loved ones a healthy New Year with blessings for a time when Covid 19 will just be a distant memory and we can remind ourselves of our fortune to have survived a world pandemic!”

  • Newsies R Us

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

As a seasoned teacher, I was delighted to have been gifted the subscription to Scholastic News, this past school year for my sixth graders. I had used the engaging magazine with all its multi-media and digital features in the past, however, as it became more expensive, the students were unable to pay for the subscription and their learning definitely was affected.

The students really enjoy the colorful magazines with lots of engaging features. Their interest in current events and non fiction articles is sparked. The captivating videos make the topics so engaging and accessible, even to the students who are English Language Learners or Students with Disabilities. The vocabulary development is so rich and engaging, with many reinforcements so that the students really internalize what they have learned. The text-to-speech feature, lower-level versions of the articles, and vocabulary slideshows make current events accessible to all of my students!”

  • Newsies R Us!

    Funded Oct 24, 2016

As the holidays approach, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you who have made such a difference in my students' lives. They were astounded to find out that people who don't even know them were kind enough to donate so much money to help them become better students. The Scholastic News Magazines are an exciting way for the to learn about current events. Especially this year, during the presidential election, they were able to keep pace with the news. The class even conducted a mock election for the entire school! The science articles really engage the students (especially the boys!). Scholastic News also provides videos that correlate to the articles that really interest the students and are perfect for the ESL students. Each magazine also comes with skills sheets and written assignments to reinforce their comprehension of the articles. The questions are all based on the Common Core Standards and helps prepare the class for the New York State ELA Exam.

In addition, you also were kind enough to sponsor a laminating machine for our class. It is so helpful to be able to laminate the student's materials and manipulatives. May your kindness be repaid many times over in your lives.

    Seasons Greetings!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L.
