I teach in a large urban middle school in Maryland. My students are in grades 6-8 . They are eager to learn music, listen to it and create it! Our school has a large African-American, Hispanic and native African population with a over 50% of the students on free and reduced meals. Many of our students have recently immigrated into the US from South America, Mexico and Africa. Many of our students cannot purchase the necessary supplies needed for success in instrumental music. Our school's funding is limited and as a result, we are not able to purchase the many supplies that our students need to encourage and develop their creativity in music performance! We have good kids at our school - they are willing to learn, they just need opportunities and encouragement! Over the years, my students have made honor roll and have become members of the National Junior Honor Society. Several are in honors courses.
