My students are fantastic, loving, intelligent, and hardworking. My math class in particular includes students of a wide range of abilities; a range which is not met using our current curriculum, as-is. Our district is comprised of roughly 4000 students, with approximately 900 in my fifth/sixth building. Our district focus over the last year has been differentiated instruction, so my goal is to differentiate my instruction as much as possible, as often as possible. One way I do this is through our Math Workshop. I gained permission to pilot this routine last school year and am looking to expand it for the upcoming year. During this time, students are assigned a personalized to-do list, focusing on their specific needs. Students are self-sufficient and work hard to truly make sense of the math they're practicing. They love this experience and gain so much from it. I can't wait to see the growth which will come from an entire year of this practice!
