  • Math and Astronomy!

    Funded Jun 5, 2013

Thank you very much for your contribution and making our field trip to the Griffith Observatory possible. I took 20 students from mix grades and 20 seniors, for a total of 40 students! I created a scavenger hunt for the students to engage in everything that the observatory had to show. The kids enjoyed taking pictures with Albert Einstein and asking questions about the pendulum! Then we concluded our day with a show about the Universe. WOW, I've never seen my students' faces light up the way they did when they stepped into the observatory and learned about their place in the Universe. So incredibly grateful for your generosity. Happy Holidays!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schlottman

  • Applied Mathematics And Reading!

    Funded Aug 22, 2012

I can't thank you enough for helping us reach our goal! We now have a class set of magazines that I can share with my students on shorten days and when they are done with classwork. I've been incorporating the magazines into my lesson plans.

My students love them and are eager to open them at every opportunity that they get! The articles both gross them out and capture their attention. There is something in there for everyone, I too enjoy them!

I've been sharing the magazines with other math teachers and I can promise you that the magazines are being well used at our campus! They other teachers are also finding interesting ways to use them...The read them as a class or they work in partners to select an article of their interest.

    Thank you for your kindness”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schlottman

Reading and understanding current events is a crucial part of growing up to be an informed, educated, and participating citizen in our country. For many years math teachers have been focus on teaching math as a procedural task. I want my students to participate in higher level thinking and learning. More than 80% of my students are below grade level reading. Seventy-five percent of the students in our at-risk school live below the poverty line. Seventy percent of our students are Hispanic, and many other cultural backgrounds are represented. My students come to school already at a disadvantage because of the difficult home lives they lead, including low socioeconomic status, single parent families, drug and alcohol abuse in the home, physical and verbal abuse, gang activity, and more. Many of these challenges contribute to our students reading far below grade level.
