I am the social worker here at UNO Major Hector Garcia Charter High School. I work with a wide range of students, some of whom suffer from developmental, anxiety, mood and/or adjustment disorders. Hector Garcia is located in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. The UNO Charter School Network serves around 5400 students in ten elementary schools and one high school. 95% of UNO students are Hispanic, 29% are limited English proficient, and 93% are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.
Our school funds are maximized to provide students with basic school materials in order to establish a proper learning environment, but many additional areas of need go unmet. Our school supports an inclusive environment for all students, which means we try to teach students to engage in stress reducing exercises both in the classroom and during counseling sessions. We encourage students to develop healthy coping skills to manage stress, anger, and sadness.
