My students live in a town of 1,500 people in rural Iowa located 50 miles from a large city. There are 750 students K-12. The average size of of the high school classes is 50. Students research careers beginning in Jr. High, continuing throughout their high school career. There is a high interest in pursuing the Hospitality and Culinary Arts Career Pathway. Participation in the Family and Consumer Sciences Culinary classes have increased. I have a mix of males and females in my classes with males being predominant. The students have limited opportunities to work in the food industry and rely on classroom experiences, guest speakers, "mom and pop restaurants," and field trips to learn about the industry, equipment, and expectations.
