  • Materials for Calm Down/Sensory Room

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

Thank you for your generosity to provide materials for my school's Calm Down/Sensory Room. According to a recent survey of my students, students have expressed a desire to have a space like this where they can go to reset their minds and bodies so they are ready to learn. They understand the value of this calm down room for both themselves and others, and they have been able to use it appropriately thus far.

Teaching students how to use this space and the calming tools from this project can prevent a student's behavior from escalating, which creates a safer, more welcoming classroom and school community. Students learn the valuable skill of listening to their bodies and understanding their emotions so they understand when they need to take steps to calm down. This is a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives to be successful and productive members of society.

On behalf of all of my students, thank you again for giving to this project!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sear

  • Toolbox for Teaching Social-Emotional Skills

    Funded Feb 9, 2020

I am completely blown away by your support in such a short amount of time! Thank you so so much for your generosity. I am so excited to be able to use these books and materials with my students, and I know it will have a positive impact on them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sear

In my work as a school social worker, it is my responsibility to counsel students who may be experiencing difficulties at school with peer relationships, teacher relationships, and learning in the classroom. I've learned that my students respond best to learning social-emotional skills by teaching with "kid-friendly" language and stories with which they can identify. These materials will provide me with resources for counseling my students with stories and characters that they can relate to, which will allow them to reflect on and grow their own critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These books, materials, and activities will be utilized with individuals and small groups of students to develop and strengthen their social-emotional skills. Providing students with engaging activities and materials to develop their social-emotional skills is crucial to helping them reach their potential both inside and outside of the classroom.
