  • Math Without Calculators is Like...Well, Its Just Not Right.

    Funded Jun 18, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donations to our classroom! The graphing calculators your donation helped purchase are as close to a video game as you can get while still sitting in math class! These calculators allow students to instantly see the connection between equations, tables, and graphs without having to spend entire class periods doing it on paper – old-school style! They can compare and change equations as well as explore patterns in ways they could never do using only pencil and paper. I have seen students' faces light up as they learn to use these tools and realize how powerful they are. I am truly excited to teach my students using these powerful tools!

Graphing calculators are the perfect tool to inspire today's youth by combining exciting technology with mathematical learning. By exploring important mathematical applications through an almost video-game like platform, your donation has helped my students realize that math is COOL and can be TONS OF FUN!

Once again, thank you so much for your donations! I hope you continue to support Donors Choose and our public school teachers! You really are making a positive difference! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ulrich

  • Student Response Remotes for Real-time Student Data!

    Funded Oct 7, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donation! We started using the student response remotes last week in class and it has really been amazing to see so far! Students are super engaged and enjoy using the technology to help them answer math questions during both classwork and quizzes. Since using them a few days last week, every day now students ask me in the morning, "Are we using the remotes today?"

The individual student remotes that your donation helped buy give students the opportunity to answer questions in real time projected on the screen and immediately see their results and the results of their class. Quizzes, tests, games... way more fun than old school paper and pencil! Students can use the remotes to respond to both multiple choice and numerical questions that are projected up on a screen and embedded within Power Point presentations. Students can immediately see if their answers are correct and I can assess and respond immediately to common student misconceptions. Today, data, cycles of re-teaching, and reassessment are driving forces in education. This student response system allows for immediate access to results which makes this data cycle much quicker and more meaningful. It also makes math class FUN!!!

Thank you so much for helping our class become a more enjoyable and effective place to learn.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ulrich

  • Tools & Compasses Help Students Meet Common Core Standards

    Funded Oct 3, 2013

THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping my students get some compasses that actually work!!! The new Common Core Standards require that students know how to do a variety of constructions and our math department hadn't used compasses in years. We only had about half the compasses we needed and most of those compasses were either broken or so loose that every time you tried to draw a circle it would look some kind of misshapen amoeba!

I teach high school geometry students at a variety of levels - from advanced to struggling. This includes many students on IEP's and 504's as well as students whose families live in challenging economic situations. Many of these students don't come to class with the materials they need to learn and be successful. They don't have the tools they need and they get extremely frustrated and often give up when confronted with minor obstacles like compasses that don't work. Your donation has made it possible for all of my students to be more successful and learn what they are supposed to in my class.

As a teacher, it is difficult some days to keep your spirits up when you work so hard with bigger and bigger classes and fewer and fewer of the things we need. It is very inspiring to know that there are people like yourself who know that public schools and kids need help right now and donate to help make my students more successful. Thank you again.”

    Mr. Ulrich

  • Teaching Math Without Paper Isn't Fun!

    Funded Feb 8, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous gift to our classroom. Using the paper you donated, I often adapt lessons from our book to add in clarification and give students more room to work. I truly believe this allows my students to be more successful and better understand the concepts embedded in our math lessons. The paper you donated has been especially helpful for my students with learning disabilities. Since our textbook's language is difficult to understand, I am able to adapt the language and the lessons so that all of my students can access the curriculum and learn the important ideas. Thank you so much for your generosity.

Your donation also made possible the purchase of green paper which I use in another successful classroom structure, the "classroom economy". This is a system where students can earn math money by doing classroom jobs, working successfully during class, exhibiting positive behavior, and turning in homework. At the end of each week, students can use this math money to buy pencils, free homework passes, stickers, a plastic egg surprise, or put their math money into a raffle to win prizes such as pencils, markers, and pencil pouches. This is always a positive note to end the week on and something that students look forward to.

Thank you so much for your generous donation. My students and I sincerely appreciate the help your donation has given to make our classroom a more positive learning environment.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ulrich

  • Pencil Prizes Can Make Math FUN!!!!!

    Funded Jan 5, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous gift to our classroom. It's amazing to see how excited students get over earned rewards such as the pencils your donation helped purchase. Many of our students are only familiar with earning consequences in school, not rewards. It is very inspiring to see their surprise and happiness.

The holiday and reward themed pencils that your donation helped purchase serve as more than just a reward to further motivate students to do well in school. These pencils have helped meet some of my students' basic learning needs. Particularly with urban students, very minor inconveniences and distractions such as not having a pencil or not having a pencil sharpener handy can turn into large classroom disruptions. Students often do not come to school with the necessary tools for being successful. This includes the physical tools required to learn such as paper and pencils as well as the emotional tools needed such as patience and perseverance. Your donations have helped alleviate some of these problems and distractions for my students so that they are better able to learn and be successful in school.

Thank you so much for your generous donation. My students and I sincerely appreciate the help your donation has given to make our classroom a more positive place.
