School is a wonderful place to read, discuss, and write about books, but it is important to make literacy part of life outside of school too! To encourage my kindergarten and first grade students to read and write about books, they will share traveling books with their families. The books for this project are all Caldecott Award winning books, making them high quality literature selections. The 45 books will be divided between kindergarten and first grade. Each book will be kept in one of the durable canvas book bags labeled with the book title and an accompanying note to families in the plastic window. The clear plastic folders will be made into traveling book review journals with a teacher created template for rating the book and writing/drawing a response about the book. Students will take the books home, one at a time, and read them with their family. After reading, families will talk about the book and allow the student to write their review of each title in the accompanying journal. These book reviews will be shared in class so students can practice their listening and speaking skills too!
Donating to this project will allow young students to engage in literacy activities with their families and at school, creating lifelong readers and writers. The traveling book review project will enrich students' literacy opportunities, engage families, build vocabulary, and motivate students to read.
This project was inspired by another DonorsChoose.org project. Mrs. Livingston's Bringing Families Together with Books and More encouraged me to find a way to connect and engage families in activities that are manageable for a busy home, have educational outcomes and are fun for all. GATESFILM
