I’d Rather Be Reading With Headphones
Funded Dec 3, 2024Thank you so much for your generous dontation! My students are so excited to use their new headphones. They were using old pairs from last year that were being held together by tape, or had only one side working; this was definetly not encouraging them or motivating them to complete their reading lessons!
My students are using their new headphones alongside a reading teachnology program that helps them pratice reading skills and strategies, and improve their reading levels overall. Three times a year, my students complete a reading assessment on the computer that assigns them a reading level which corresponds to a grade level. Students then work on lessons that are assigned specifically to them based on the reading and grade level of their assessment. Both the assessments and lessons have audio and that is where the need for the headphones comes in. Many of my students are reading below grade level or are English Language Learners, and English is not their first language. The audio is very helpful for those students to engage and interact with the assessment and with the lesson,s and the headphones are the vechicle that connects the two.”

Funded Jan 19, 2024Thank you again for your generous donation! Although we are a technology school, we are often lacking in tech that is updated or even functioning. Items such as headphones, which are essential for the many computer programs that our students use, do not have longevity; they often break after so much use. It is for that reason that we are so grateful for your contribution.
Students are currently using their new headphone during AIS (Academic Intervention Services), where they are working on Math problems and ELA skills through a computer program called iReady. Students take three iReady assessments in Math and ELA during the school year, and complete many skill-based lessons on their own depending on their assessment data. The assessments and lessons have an audio option that is especially helpful to students who are not native English language speakers, or who are reading below their current grade level.
In addition to using the headphones for iReady, we also have students using them this year to assist with the computer-based state exams in Math and Science. Students with specialized education plans who have a test-read aloud accommodation have been using headphones along with the text-to-speech option as they work their way through the exams. This option has helped to make the exams more accessible, and in turn, the students more successful.”

Funded May 14, 2009I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generosity in the donation of books for my students. One of my teaching goals every year is to foster an enjoyment (dare I say love?) of reading in my students; I want to help improve their fluency and comprehension, but I also strive to create an overall joy of reading that they will carry with them throughout their lives. Being able to share a brand new set of "The Giver" with my students is one of the first steps toward helping them reach those goals.
My school often does not have brand new materials or supplies to share with my students. I often see the looks of disappointment when I hand them books to read that have seen years of use and misuse. Many books are often missing front covers and inside pages, or have broken spines. Handing out the new set of "The Giver" and telling my students they are the first to handle these books has filled them with a strong sense of ownership and pride. They have been very quick to brag to other students and teachers in the school about their brand new books!
I just wanted to say thank you again for your sincere act. I know that whenever my students think about "The Giver", they will be reminded of you and the kindness you have shown towards them. You have made a difference in their li”

Funded Dec 21, 2007Thank you so much for your generous donation! With your help, my students will now be able to complete projects which were previously left unfinished. They will also have the opportunity to have their very own dictionary to take home at the end of the school year. I cannot wait to return to school from the winter break to share with them this wonderful news. Thanks again!

Dictionaries for Vocabulary Work
Funded Sep 14, 2006Thank you so much for your generous donation! My students constantly ask if I can buy them brand new dictionaries for class use. Just today, they were doing vocabulary work and grumbling about the bad condition of their current books. Many have torn covers or missing pages. Your gift will surely make vocabulary work more appealing and engaging. Thanks again!

Poetry in the Real World -- Bridging the Gap!
Funded Apr 12, 2006Thank you so much for donating a class set of Bronx Masquerade to my class! I have been reading the book to my students since the start of poetry month (April 1) and my students love it! Many ask if they can borrow my copy to read outside of class-I can't wait to give them a copy of their own. I appreciate your generosity and look forward to sharing it with my students.
Sincerely,
