Just the Facts, Ma'am!
Funded Dec 15, 2010Thank you so much for enriching the reading instruction for my second-graders. They love the Weekly Reader because of the topical material. They are able to read it independently, and the questions on the back give them practice with important skills such as interpreting charts and graphs and reading maps.
The teacher materials included with the Weekly Reader support the standards I am teaching. An added bonus is the online edition, which includes videos which help my students understand science concepts.
Another part of my project was the purchase of practice materials for reading skills. My students enjoy using them and are strengthening their abilities to distinguish fact from opinion, sequence events, and identify the main idea.
We are very appreciative of your generosity.”

Funded Sep 30, 2009Thank you so much for your generous donations to our classroom My students are enjoying reading Time for Kids and the Weekly Reader. They are full of questions about the world around them, and they are soaking up information that is both timely and relevant. These publications give my students extra practice in reading and comprehending non-fiction. They also include graphs, charts, and maps for the students to use.
In addition, the extra resources in the teacher's guides support the curriculum standards for my grade level. I really appreciate this extra bonus.
My students were thrilled when they found out they could bring their magazines home with them. The topics we have covered in these publications have led us to do more research. Students are learning about various sources of information so they can become independent learners.
We look forward to enjoying and learning from your donation throughout the school year.”

Read, Read, Read!
Funded Dec 15, 2008We are thrilled to receive this grant! My students are making good progress in reading and are ready to attack the chapter books I selected. They will be so excited.
We also are finishing a unit on physical science, so we'll be ready to start earth science and life science after our winter break. The books will be an invaluable asset.
In addition to learning how to read, I strive to give my students a love of reading. Having good books to choose from certainly encourages this. I also want my students to become independent learners, so it's wonderful to have more non-fiction books for them to read and report on.
Thank you so much for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Lind”

Hands-on Science
Funded Aug 4, 2008Thank you so much for your donation to support our science program. All materials relate to our grade level science standards and will be used to enhance instruction. I feel that science instruction is important in the early grades because it shows them how to find answers to questions they have about the world around them. They learn to observe, analyze, perform experiments, and relate their reading to real life. Hopefully, I can encourage more students to study science in high school and college. Your generosity will make this possible”
