My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with. They are 100% ESL (they comprise 65% of the school population) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and always want to learn something new! My students attend a public school in New Jersey. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common in most of their households and the purchase of books for personal reasons simply does not exist for most of my students. If I can provide for them by building an extensive library of high interest books, then I believe I can begin to help them become star students.
