6th grade is an exciting, pivotal age, a bridge between childhood and being a young adult. Learning at the 6th grade level is as much about self-awareness and ones part in the world as it is about academics. 6th graders play with legos and American Girl dolls, while simultaneously organizing fundraisers for Mercy Corps or Heifer International; the transition from child to young adult is exciting but often tumultuous. Our suburban school has been burdened by many of the same challenges facing schools across the country. Poverty is a very real presence in our community and our hallways, with the number of students eligible for free or reduced lunch rising from 14% to near 60% in the last 6 years. LIteracy is, for many of our students, the bridge to future success. In addition, We must make every effort to ensure that our students have regular access to technology Despite our budget constraints.
