My students live in a high poverty area and attend a high poverty school. 97% of the students at our school are eligible for free and reduced price lunch. They are against incredible adversity, but every day they show up to school, ready and excited to learn. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious, and I am so lucky to have a chance to teach them. My students are in third grade, and they dream of going to college and becoming anything from nurses to neurosurgeons to entering the Marine Corps. They are ambitious and caring, curious and intelligent. They are amazing third graders, growing up in a tough area, who deserve the same resources and opportunities as anyone else.
