Headsprout for a Head Start
Funded Mar 26, 2019Thank you so much for your generosity. My students and I were touched by your kindness.
Thanks to the Headsprout program we purchased, my students were able to practice their reading and phonics skills on a daily basis in school and at home. Unlike many of the district purchased programs, this program met students at their current ability level and filled in the gaps to help them progress towards their actual grade level faster. They did not experience the same level of frustration they normally do. Due to their time using Headsprout my average student made 1.5 years of reading progress in just a matter of months.
Thank you again for giving my students the opportunity to learn at their pace in a stress free environment. It made such a difference in their lives.”

School Supplies for a Good Start in a New Country
Funded Sep 1, 2017I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to my project. Often our new students come in confused and afraid. It is so wonderful to see our community embrace our newest members.
The supplies that you have funded have been handed out to new students as the enroll in our schools. Students have been able to walk into their new classroom prepared and ready to learn. Your donation has enabled our newest students to start their first year in American schools with a little more confidence and security. Thank you so much for helping myself and my coworkers provide these amazing children with a great first day of school.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Sergey Brin Family Foundation and 2 other donors.School Supplies For a Fresh Start in a New Country!
Funded Jul 23, 2015Thank you so much for your generous donations. I cannot begin to describe what a difference having basic school supplies on the first day of school makes for my students.
The supplies your donations have purchased were packaged together and given to students upon arrival at our school. This means from the moment they walked into the classroom they were prepared to learn. Having these supplies, which many of our students have never had, helped to assuage some of the stress of starting school in a new country. When new students don't have to worry about starting school off right they are able to focus on learning how to be in school, a new language, and totally new concepts.
Thank you again for your incredible kindness. You have made such a difference in the lives of these children.”

Help Refugees Succeed with Percy Jackson
Funded Nov 4, 2014Thank you so much for your very generous donations. My students were extremely excited to receive the books in class. We spent about a month reading and analyzing Percy Jackson. They have never read chapter books before and were very eager to bring the books home to read. They also loved the story of Percy Jackson. Thank you for giving them a chance to work with such a high interest novel. Because of the great experience my students had with this novel, they are now looking forward to working with their next novel. It is wonderful that people all over the country are willing to help my students succeed. Thank you so much.”

Help Refugee Students Fall In Love With Reading!
Funded Dec 19, 2014Thank you so much for your kindness. My students were so excited to be able to actually have their own copy of the book that they could read in school and take home. Most of these students do not have any books in their home, they definitely do not have chapter books. Being able to take these home was such a simple thing that made such a difference for them.
We have used these books to start a new unit designed by NY state to meet common core standards. Using a novel to teach skills has been very helpful to my students. I see them succeed in ways they did not when using a text book. Students also really seemed to connect with the main character and some of the experiences he went through. Thank you so much for providing my students with this wonderful opportunity to simply enjoy a novel while also learning new skills.”

Help Make Reading Accessible to English Learners
Funded Aug 12, 2014Thank you again for your generous gifts. You donations have helped of 300 refugee children become better readers. My students have really enjoyed being finding articles and stories they are able to read and still find a little challenging. Thanks to you I have been able to split my classes into groups and reach all of my students exactly where they need to be.
My students are really excited to use the Reading A-Z close reads. It has taught them to use a skill that all other 6th graders are using, but that they were not capable of using when reading normal 6th grade materials. By using this website I am able to find stories and articles that are at a lower level, but that do not look like they are for kindergartners. This makes 6ht grade students much more comfortable and willing to do the work.
I cannot thank you enough for your kindness. You have made a huge difference in my students lives.”

Help ELLs Be Test Ready!
Funded Mar 22, 2014Thank you so much for your generous donation. My students were so excited to receive study materials of their own.
Each English Language Learner received their own study book which allowed us to practice during class and independently. Having such great resources allowed my students to see how questions on the New York State exams would be worded and, more importantly, allowed them to become comfortable with the wording of test questions.
As English learners my students often just struggle understanding what a question is asking. After using our exam prep books they definitely understood what each question was asking and were therefore able to give a more complete answer.
Thank you again for your kindness. We are so appreciative of donors like you.”

A Printer for English Language Learners.
Funded Nov 11, 2013Thank you so much for your generosity. My students were ecstatic to receive the printer. Many of them have never actually seen a paper print.
My students have used this printer to print research papers for my class and for other teachers classes. They have also used it to create book reports. We have also used the printer to write and publish our own classroom bulletin. This has been a wonderful way to give students a voice and to keep parents informed.
Thank you so much for giving my students this wonderful opportunity to express themselves.”

Refugees Create a School Community
Funded Oct 30, 2013Thank you so much for your generosity. My students were so excited when they saw all the supplies. Once they saw the flags of their country, they were so proud to see them hanging in our school. Many of them wanted to take the flags home with them. All of the students eagerly showed off their flags to other students and some even explained the history behind it.
We worked as a class to design and put up the bulletin board. Students have begun to write personal narratives about the country they are from and their experiences in that country. It is wonderful to see a part of this school dedicated to just them and their unique backgrounds.
This project has allowed my students to be proud of where they are from and share it with others. One of the things I didn't realize when I originally came up with this idea was how excited the younger students would be to see the display. Thank you so much for your help making my students so excited to be a part of this school.”

School Supplies for a Fresh Start in a New Country!
Funded Dec 7, 2012Thank you so much for your generous donation. The school supplies that you donated have made a big difference in the academic lives of our new refugee students. We have given them to new students as they arrived, which they do weekly. Starting school in a new country with little to no English can be scary; this simple gift has made starting school less stressful. Our students have been very excited to use all of their new supplies.
Our families often do not have the money to get school supplies or the knowledge of what to buy and where to buy them. Without your help students would not have gotten such a great start to their new lies.
Thank you again for your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Kormash-Gallagher
