  • Understanding Emotions and Feelings

    Funded Jun 22, 2023

My students were drawn to the books the minute they walked through the door. I introduced the book about classroom rules, they talked about classroom rules and they each has a chance to draw their own dragon. They talked about which rule they would teach their dragon. They also use their brake time to go to the library/ cool off corner to look at the beautifully authored books. They often ask me or my assistant to read the books to them.

I really feel that I'm reaching them at their level with the help of these books. They are proud of the art work on the bulletin board. They visit the board, corner and books often.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rodriguez

  • Calming Area

    Funded Feb 2, 2023

My students are beyond excited to have a cozy corner with resources to help them understand and regulate their feelings.

When they first saw the bean bags and the lap dogs, they began cheering and celebrating, they ran to the rug, to enjoy the pillows, bean bags and lap dogs. After the initial reaction, we sat and talked about the projects and they were thanking the donor. We then, we went on to talk about the calm corner and the purpose and appropriate use of the materials.

Now the student who would typically leaves the classroom, now stay in class and sits on the bean bag instead for a break. The student explores the wands and the emotion/picture library while she calms down. If there is a problem on the yard, I mention the calm corner and she comes to the class and sits directly in the calm corner. It has been a real help with my students. I cant keep the children out of the calm corner!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rodriguez

Currently, I bring in my personal iPad for student use. I use a variety of educational apps as rewards and reinforcement. I also use the ipad to access websites and that help scaffold my students instruction. The apps on my personal ipad distract my students. I don't allow my students to access non-educational apps, so I'd like ipads only for classroom purposes. I have already purchased apps like, "Teach Your Monster to Read", 2 "Touch Math" apps and the "Teach Me" series. I can transfer all of those to the iPads that I'd receive. The touch math app allow me to scaffold number sense for my students. Once my students have a good concept of numbers, they use this knowledge to simplify adding and subtracting concept.
