In an effort to help all of the students at our school develop a growth mindset that includes critical thinking and creativity I am working to set up a science lab that provides students with tools and equipment regularly used in real-world settings to gain knowledge that can be retained and applied to solve real-world problems and challenges. We currently have access to some basic cell models for life science and a few donated 'fixed slides' of different types of cells. However, students would benefit greatly from viewing and studying a variety of self-prepared slides as well as learning proper use of microscopes and other scientific tools. Students who are introduced to equipment and tools used in real-world settings have a better chance of learning, understanding, applying and retaining information when learned in a hands-on, problem solving situation. By funding this project, students of all ages at our school will benefit from their use. Primary students can get experience handling scientific equipment that has potential to spark creativity and curiosity. Upper elementary students in 3rd through fifth-grade will have the opportunity to view micro-organisms as part of their life-science studies including life-cycles, food chains, food webs, and distinguishing similarities and differences between plant and animal cells.
