What is the number one cause of student absence? Illness. You'd be surprised at how many times in one day five year old children touch their noses and then their mouths or other children. Many students have a habit of sucking on their fingers and hands and the germs just spread like wild fire. Once one child is ill, many follow. I teach kindergarten to English learners in a low performing, low socio-economic, urban school.
