I have the great pleasure of being the math teacher of a group of very enthusiastic and eager middle school English language learners (ELLs). Most of my students have recently arrived to the United States as refugees. For many, my classroom is their first encounter in a formal educational setting. Our public school is special because overall we have a large population of ELL students. Not only are my students formally learning English for academic purposes, they are also building friendships with others they ordinarily would have never known or communicated with from all around the world.
