  • Basic Supplies for First Grade!

    Funded May 27, 2019

Thank you so much for your largess. Because of you, my students were able to work on group projects in science and social studies using markers and chart paper. This is highly motivating! We also displayed the items for the children to share with each other.

Other items in the project were highlighters that the students were able to use to categorize words for rhyming, syllables and more. The erasers were prizes I was able to give the children for their pencil tops, Some items such as the packing tape, white out and the stapler were used by me to keep the classroom flowing.

    Your kindness is truly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan

  • Scholastic News for First Grade Success!

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

Thank you for your generous donation to our Scholastic News! We have enjoyed reading about bats, veterans, Thanksgiving, gingerbread and more. When we return to school in January we will read about the New Year. What makes Scholastic News so special is that each student receives their own copy to bring home to share with their families. The topics covered are of high interest to the children. They also have videos that go along with each issue. The students wrote letters to veterans for Veteran's Day. We read about gingerbread cookies and then decorated our own.

Without your largess, these resources would not have been possible. Your kindness is so appreciated!”

  • First Grade Wants to Learn About Life Cycles!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donations! My first graders got to experience life cycles up close in the classroom. They completed experiments with the mealworms to determine their ideal habitat. Then they observed the pupa and the adult beetles. You can see some of the writing the children did on the bulletin board in the photograph.

Later in the spring the children observed the life cycle of the caterpillar to the butterfly. Because of your largess the children observed the butterflies laying their eggs on the leaves of the mallow plants! It was truly amazing. The cycle continued and new caterpillars emerged!

I am so grateful for the experience my students had this year. It got them very excited about science. They're enthusiasm translated into some amazing writing. Thank you again.”

  • Scholastic News for Nonfiction Success!

    Funded Mar 30, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donations. As you can see, the children love to read Scholastic News! The subscription includes a copy for each child to read and bring home. It also has a big issue to for the class to share and a digital issue. The class enjoyed watching videos about topics such as animals, holidays and plants and seeds. The Science Spin had an issue about the life cycle of dandelions. We used it to create charts showing the life cycle. You can see the results in the photographs! We used the chart paper and markers that you donated.

The children also enjoyed the stickers. They worked and studied hard to earn the shiny stickers. These materials would not have been available without your kindness. It is very appreciated.”

  • First Grade Wants to Learn About Life Cycles!

    Funded Feb 9, 2017

Thank you so much for your generosity! The children worked with the mealworms during the months of March and April. We completed 3 experiments to determine the conditions mealworms prefer, by observing their reaction to dry/damp, light/dark and what they prefer to eat. They also observed the life cycle from larva to pupa and adult mealworm.

On the third of May we received our caterpillars. They were smaller than the children's fingernails and grew to an inch and a half by month end. Our caterpillars turned to chrysalis and adult butterflies. The children observed another metamorphosis before their eyes! Currently the adult butterflies are laying eggs on the mallow plants. The children made another experiment in which they observed that the butterflies would not lay on a plant that the caterpillars do not eat. We now have caterpillar eggs. When the caterpillars hatch, we will use the food to start the cycle over again.

The children would not have had these amazing experiences without your largess. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan

  • Empowering My Students Through Art

    Funded May 23, 2016

Thanks to your generous donations my class has enjoyed several art projects that enhanced their learning. In the fall they decorated trees with construction paper leaves to add to their writing about the season. As you can see from the photographs, their Thanksgiving writing was also displayed on colorful paper. Each month their seasonal writing goes up and they absolutely love the way the classroom is decorated for the season. We had snowman up in December and we have New Years bells up for January. In February our favorite books will be recommended on Valentine's and displayed on the red construction paper.

Each week I have a group of first and second graders in a Schoolwide Enrichment Model. These students are especially interested in art. They created apple collages with red, yellow and green paint. They also painted paper plate jack o' lanterns. They also sketched flowers in the manner of Van Goh on the paper that you provided.

There are still materials for the children to use this year to create, make Mother's Day gifts and display their work. Your largess is appreciated.”

  • Laptop Learning!

    Funded Aug 25, 2016

I am so grateful for your the laptop. Thanks to your generosity we are able to use the laptop in numerous ways. It allows us to research topics of interest to us. We are currently learning about children from around the world. With the laptop we can see photographs and research answers to questions we have. Today we read a video on Scholastic Science Spin about Inuit people living in Canada.

I also use the laptop for lesson plans and maintaining a classroom web-site. In addition, I write proposals for donorschoose.org.

Thank you again for caring about my students!”

  • Scholastic News for Nonfiction Success!

    Funded Mar 25, 2016

Thank you so much for providing my students with high quality non-fiction reading material. Four times a month, my students receive their own copy of Scholastic News which is full of engaging articles. The topics include children caring for Earth, Ben Franklin's inventions and fire safety to name a few. The magazines come with additional materials including engaging short videos, as well as reproducible skills that are common core aligned. Science Spin is a favorite because it has topics such as the life cycle of a frog and insects. The special edition in the life cycle of seeds was perfect for our Spring study of the life cycle of seeds. I truly appreciate your generosity in providing these materials to my students!”

  • First Grade Wants to Learn About Life Cycles!

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Thank you so much for support this exciting endeavor! The children observed life cycle of the mealworm to the darkling beetle. They performed experiments with the mealworms (light/dark, damp/dry, food preference) to determine their preferred habitat. These experiments brought science to life. The children were also able to observe the life cycle of caterpillars to a butterflies. It was amazing to watch the caterpillars grow and change into pupas. After the butterflies emerged, the students watched in amazement as they laid eggs on the mallow plants. Sure enough, tiny caterpillars emerged and the students saw the cycle begin again!

This type of learning will stay with the children. They did not just read about life cycles, they observed and touched it! The experiments and observations were part of our school science fair. Our class also went on a trip to a butterfly sanctuary. I'm certain that I have more than one budding entomologist in my class because of your generosity. I am grateful to you for this fantastic opportunity for my students.”

  • Empowering Students Through Art

    Funded Mar 29, 2016

    Dear Donors,

My students LOVE these materials! The bright paper brightens up their work on the bulletin board. They used the glitter shapes, glitter and stickers on the butterfly craft. The butterfly craft will be displayed on our bulletin board about butterfly life cycles. They made Mother's Day photo frames with the frame craft kit. Each child was so happy to give their parent a beautiful, original creation.

Many of the items are necessary for displaying art. Items such as the staples, tape and stapler are not very glamorous, but are used to hang the work up.

Thank you so much for your generosity. Due to budget cuts, any of these materials would not be available without your support. I truly appreciate it.”
