  • Science Really Matters!

    Funded Apr 16, 2009

Thanks to your donation, my class had fun while learning about matter. They had several interesting books to read with wonderful colorful illustrations! The Matter Activity box included vocabulary rings, experiments, photographs, and write and erase activity boards. The children were able to work both independently and in groups on various activities.

A balance scale was also included and the children got to measure various solids and observe which objects were heavier and which were lighter. This lead to so many other activities such as sorting matter and classifying it by different characteristics.

The students truly learn from hands-on activities that you generously donated. Without your kindness, this would have not been possible due to drastic budget constraints.

The books and the Matter Activity Box will be used again next year! Thank you again. ”

  • Help Us Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Read!

    Funded Feb 24, 2009

Thank you so much for your generosity. Your donation helped my class as well as the planet! I will no longer have to re-write vocabulary and flash cards on new index cards year after year. With the laminating machine, I'm able to write the cards and use them over and over again. The cards have become practically indestructible! I allow the children a lot more freedom to take the cards to their desks in pairs and review with each other because I know that they will not come back to me ripped.

We did a lesson on Earth Day about the importance of 'going green'. The children appreciate the laminated cards and papers so much more because they know that it saves trees! They believe that they can help the Earth, even if they're only six or seven years old.

In this economic time and with budget cuts to education the laminating machine is so valuable. It will be used for years to come.

    Thanks again.”

  • Basic Needs for Reading, Writing and Following Instructions!

    Funded Apr 20, 2009

As the year winds down, the supply closets dwindle. Your donation was just in time! We were running out of pencils and glue sticks for projects. You will see several projects that we used glue for in the photos. The children and I use the markers to create colorful charts. The students truly enjoy the sense of accomplishment when they work together on a project. These markers or not run or bleed. Also essential are wipes to clean dry erase boards. I post words, sentences and assignments on dry erase boards, and the towelettes help to make the boards shine!

My class in particular loves to glitter their work with sparkle! You will see them glittering their field day banner in the photographs. In addition, we use glitter when we're preparing our thank you letters to donors from donorschoose.

Of course I use chalk throughout the day, everyday. The children also come up to the board and get a chance to work on math or spelling using chalk. Thank you for keeping us supplied though the end of the year.

Thank you so much for your generous donation in this difficult economic time! ”

  • First Grade Needs to Read for Understanding and Fluency!

    Funded Mar 4, 2009

The fluency activities have already helped raise the reading levels of my students! You made an immediate impact upon my first grade class. They have been listening to passages on cd's and tapes to hear how to read fluently. Then they read the passage aloud to a partner. The children also have 'Reader's Theater' which allows a pair of students to read a short 'play' together.

One of the fluency kits also came with large copies of passages to read chorally with the class. It also came with a matching set of the passages that would be xeroxed for the children to practice reading at home. It explains how to read using the proper punctuation (e.g. a period is a pause, a comma is a short pause, and you raise your voice at the end of a question).

Studies have proven that as readers improve their fluency, they improve their comprehension. I agree with these studies because I've witnessed it first hand with my students.

Thank you so much for the excellent materials. Without your generosity, the fluency kits would never have been available for my students, especially with the budget cuts to education. Please know that the kits will be used for years to come.”

  • Help American Students Keep Up in Science!

    Funded Dec 14, 2008

Thank you so much for your generosity. I'm so excited that this project got funded! You enabled me to keep my first graders involved in hands on activities about weather. The students won't just be reading from a book, or listening to me read. We'll be using the materials for experiments. With budget cuts in this economy, this would never be a resource normally available. Please know that the materials will be used for years to come.

    Thanks again”

  • First Grade Wants to "Spring" Into Science!

    Funded Feb 15, 2009

Thank you for your wonderful donations. Spring has sprung in my first grade classroom! We have been observing small caterpillars as they eat and eat and grow into large, fuzzy caterpillars. They are currently in the chrysalis stage. The children are observing them with magnifying glasses as they hang upside down. We are eagerly awaiting their transformation into butterflies. We have planned a trip to a local park to release them after a couple of days.

The Life Cycle Learning Center has helped the children understand the life cycles of not only butterflies, but also frogs and chicks. Soon we'll be growing seeds and the Plant Learning Center will help students understand plant parts and function. This hands on learning is something that the children will always remember.

I know that they are enjoying what they're learning because they check the butterfly nursery first thing each morning. They have also written butterfly poems.

Without your generosity this memorable experience would not have been possible, especially with cut-backs to the education budget. Thank you so much for your kindness!

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan

  • We Want to Write Every Day!

    Funded Jun 10, 2008

I am excited that the Draw and Write Journals have been funded. Thanks to your generosity, my students will be able to keep their writing throughout the year in notebooks that are "just right" for them. The lines are made for first graders to write on and it has space for pictures. The children (and their parents) will be able to see the progress that they make in writing from early in the school year until June.

Your kindness will help improve the children's writing skills. It will certainly be a keepsake for their families to treasure when the year ends.

    Thank you so much!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. ”

  • We Dig Dinosaurs!

    Funded Jan 20, 2009

My students expressed an interest in learning about dinosaurs. Your generosity made the study come alive for them. The children painted dinosaurs and created a diorama to make a 'home' for them. They each made their own stick puppets, and put on skits that told about what they learned in their unit of study. The stick puppets had scales and other items to glue on to make the dinosaurs look realistic.

The Dinosuar Activity Tub was loaded with so many things! They used stamps and a stamp pad to create their own dinosaur picture. There were miniature fossils of various dinosaurs. What a way to bring the word 'fossil' alive! The tub also included a concentration game and a model T-Rex.

The students enjoyed working on the dinosaur puzzle. That is not something that most of them have at home. As you can see from the photographs they had a blast (and learned at the same time.)

I cannot express enough gratitude to you for making this study of dinosaurs so all-encompassing! Without your kindness this never would have been possible. I believe that the children will remember this for years to come.”

    Ms. Sullivan

  • Basics Needed for Reading & Writing!

    Funded Jan 8, 2009

I'm so excited that the children will be able to create their own charts with the paper and the markers. Your generosity means so much to my class. The fluency books will help the students become better readers. Since my students read at different levels, I now have the opportunity to work at the first and second grade level. The glitter helps the students' work to shine!

Thank you so much for your generosity.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. ”

  • Reading, Writing and Arithmetic!

    Funded Jan 11, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation. The Math Story Boxes will help with reading, as well as addition, subtraction and number comparison. The Die in the Dice has so many uses for addition and subtraction. It will keep the children engaged in math.

I appreciate your gift so much. Please know that it will be used by my first graders this year, and for years to come!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. ”
