  • Technology for Math and Science Success!

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

The children were so excited about the laptop that they wanted to write the thank you letters right away! In the photographs, you can see their excitement as they opened the box! The students were squealing with delight!

We will be able to use SMART Board with this computer. This will allow the students to have interactive lessons using state of the art technology.

The class is so thrilled to have a laptop! I'll be able to download photographs of the children (and their activities) to our school web-site. The desktop that we have is an older model and I was unable to do that before. Since our desktop often breaks down, we'll be able to access the Internet whenever we need to.

Thank you for your kindness. It is so appreciated! Your generosity is astounding! You are amazing people. In this era of budget cuts, you really came through. This computer will help children learn for years to come.!

    Thanks again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan

  • Help First Graders Feel Like Published Authors!

    Funded Nov 10, 2009

Thank you so much for giving my classroom the gift of a reliable printer/copy machine. The children use it to print out their stories. I also allow them to print out interesting things that they find on the Internet. Often times now they come to me with attractive writing paper that they want to print. It get them motivated to write. They have also printed out ideas for creative projects to do in class.

The machine also can be used as a scanner and I'll be able to upload the students' work to our school web-site! As you can see from the photographs, I have used the machine myself to write up descriptions of the children's work. I then display the write-ups it next to the bulletin board.

It is so wonderful to have a working copy/printer/scanner in the classroom. The copy machine has saved me more than once when I was one or two copies short of something because a student made a mistake and needed another copy. You have enabled my class to run smoothly. I am so grateful!

    Thanks again!”

  • Radio City Music Hall Offers the Experience of a Lifetime!

    Funded Sep 16, 2009

Thank you for the "experience of a lifetime"! That was the title of the proposal that you funded, and I can tell you that it was truly an unforgettable trip. As you can see from the photographs, we had a wonderful day. We lined up to get into Radio City Music Hall right by the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. The children were thrilled!

When we entered the theater, the children did not know where to look next, and all that could be heard were squeals of delight! "Oooh, look at this!", "Look over there!", and "Wow!" One of the first acts was a 3-dimensional show in which Santa's sled flies around and images come towards the audience such as presents, wreaths, snow and other holiday treats! The children had never seen the show and the Rockettes were amazing! They loved their precision dancing and most especially when they got 'shot' out of a cannon. There was 'skating' in Central Park and singing Santas. They enjoyed seeing Santa's workshop and Mrs. Claus!

I truly believe that this is a trip that they will look back upon and remember when they're adults. Thank you for your kind generosity. You gave my class a priceless gift! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I hope that the kindness that you bestowed upon my class is returned to you many times over! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan

  • Super SONIC Supplies!

    Funded Sep 8, 2009

I cannot thank you enough for how much you have helped my first grade class! We always have enough pencils. We even have a new job of 'pencil sharpener' as you can see in the photos. The children earn this job with responsible behavior because they understand the value of the sharpener.

The class has enjoyed working with the markers and chart paper. We use them for everything from morning messages to math to word families.

Your generosity has kept the classroom flowing so smoothly this year. I appreciate the kindness you have shown. Please know that you are helping my first graders be the best that they can be!”

  • Basic Needs for Math, Science and Reading!

    Funded Sep 17, 2009

Thank you for the much needed supplies. The students were able to start to use them the day they arrived. As you can see from the photographs, the children are using markers to help create and add to charts. The charts are hung up for them to refer back to. The children also use the dry erase markers for writing and math. The colorful chalk helps differentiate things on the board. For example, when reviewing coins, we use different colors for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

You can also see that the children are reading plays from the Reader's Theater Science book. So far, they have read about fall and the harvest. There are many more short plays that help the children learn about science topics, and help improve reading fluency at the same time! They're having so much fun with it. We have also gotten several ideas for science experiments from the Science book.

The pencils and electric sharpener have kept the classroom humming as my students continue on their journey to becoming authors. I'm so grateful for your generosity! Items such as the three hole punch helps me keep the children's work organized in binders.

Many of the items can be used for years to come. Thanks again!”

  • Weekly Reader Puts Science Into the Curriculum!

    Funded Apr 12, 2009

Your generosity has already made an impact on my students! They started with a Weekly Reader about classroom rules. They were amazed that they were able to take the magazine home with them!

On September 17, we read the issue about the US Constitution. Since the Constitution was ratified on September 17, 1787, it was a wonderful addition to our social studies curriculum. On the first day of fall, we read about apple trees.

The next issue that we'll read is about tornadoes. Not only is it timely, but it fits with our science curriculum about weather. Future issues include bats, sharks, fire safety and summer reading.

The magazine keeps the students' attention because it's glossy and has color photos. The writing is first grade appropriate. This year the subscription includes an on-line link for one issue per month, which keeps the children even more interested!

Thank you so much for enriching my classroom with the spirit of kindness and the richness of the written word! ”

  • Read All About Math!

    Funded Jun 22, 2009

The children love the "Read All About Math Learing Center" and I do too! They are reading books about math topics that we are learning. For example, we're learning about money and they read "A Quarter From the Tooth Fairy". Then, they're able to take activities (in this case coins) to their desks. Each center has its own set of answers so that they can check their own work.

The Learning Center includes classic books such as "The Doorbell Rang" and "Clocks and More Clocks" by Pat Hutchins, "Anno's Magic Seeds" by Misumana Anno and "How Big is a Foot?" by Rolf Myller. Not only are they improving their reading skills, but they're learning math as well.

Each Learning Center comes with manipulatives that go along with the subject being taught. They also come with extra "Try This" sections that ask the children to think about math problems and write out their answers.

Thanks to your generosity the students are reading, learning math and having fun at the same time. It's a teacher's dream come true! It came with a handy storage rack for easy accessibility and clean up. Please know that this will be used for years to come!

I appreciate your kindness, especially in this difficult economy. Thanks again.”

  • Can You Please Make Time for Kids?

    Funded Aug 27, 2009

Thank you so much for the subscription to Time for Kids! As you can see, the children are enjoying it so much. There is a large teacher's edition that we read together. This allows one child at a time to come up to the board and read while the other students follow along.

The class read an issue about a farm before a class trip to a farm. They were able to bring the magazine home with them to read with their families the night before the trip. We've also read about Christopher Columbus, space and fire safety.

Future issues include topics such as bats, pumpkins, Thanksgiving, and Presidents. Each month one issue contains a current event topic. The students are also able to go on-line and read more about the topic that we're studying.

Without your generosity, this would not have been possible. I appreciate your kindness so much! Most children in first grade are not exposed to much non-fiction reading. You have made it accessible and fun for them.

    Thanks again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan

  • It's the Kids that Count (And Measure And Add!)

    Funded Jul 24, 2009

The children are enjoying learning math! The large dice have numerous uses, including adding by counting on the dots and tallying the numbers that are rolled.

The bulletin board coins are posted with names and values. The coin dice are used for coin recognition now, but will be used to add coin values later in the year. The magnetic coins are used by the children to trade pennies for nickels and dimes. Later, they'll be used to trade for other values.

The in and out machine is part of our math curriculum. It helps with addition and subtraction. The word of the day problems are used currently by advanced students.

Thank you so much for your generosity. Without your kindness, these materials would not be available. The materials will be used for years to come!”

  • First Grade Needs to Read and Listen!

    Funded Sep 4, 2009

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

You can see from the smiles on the children's faces as they sit at the Listening Center that they're having fun! Although it's only September, the children are already able to read together and discuss books in small groups. Because of the generosity of SONIC Drive-In, two groups of students can work at the Listening Center at one time. This allows them to read books at their own levels.

The day that the the cd player, head sets and junction boxes arrived, they were put into use. The Listening Center is one of the students' favorite activities! They're enjoying themselves and learning at the same time!

I salute SONIC Drive-In for their commitment to education!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sullivan
