I teach Geometry to 8th graders at an urban school in California. Over 80% of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. We are a small school by design, with the mission of preparing our students for college and beyond. We pride ourselves on rigorous curriculum and project-based learning. In the neighborhood where I teach, being called a nerd is a horrible insult. Street cred gets you way farther than honor roll in our neck of the woods. But even as their peers laugh, my middle school geometry students are a between one and two years ahead in math. They are incredibly motivated, extremely engaged and very energetic. These are the kids who are ready to beat the odds. They want to understand everything right away, they are impatient and they devour information.
